It follows the selections in Misaka’s May 19, 2024 list, in that editor’s order—not an objective or consensus ranking. “Historical romance” is used broadly here: some stories draw on real periods, while others rely on fantasy, reincarnation, time travel, or invented settings. Several picks are Chinese animated series, often called donghua; this list uses “anime” in the wider popular sense of East Asian animation, not only Japanese animation.
How to choose from this list
The titles vary in how closely they resemble historical drama and how much their plots center romance. Some use recognizable historical backdrops; others borrow period clothing, palace politics, or ancient-China-inspired worlds for fantasy. Romance may be the central relationship, one strand in a larger adventure, or a gradual arc alongside the heroine’s ambitions.

Ten historical romance anime and donghua
1. InuYasha
A modern girl is transported to feudal Japan, where she frees the half-demon Inuyasha. The result is an adventure-fantasy with romance and a love triangle, rather than a period drama focused on historical realism. Misaka’s May 19, 2024 list reports 167 episodes; treat that as the figure reported by that source, not a separately verified current count. See the original list.

2. The Rose of Versailles
Set amid the French Revolution, the story follows Oscar, a woman raised as a man who serves at Versailles. Court life and political upheaval give the romance a dramatic historical backdrop. Of these picks, it is among the clearest choices for viewers seeking a recognizable real-world period rather than a fantasy setting.
3. Romeo x Juliet
This is a fantasy reworking of the star-crossed lovers, set on a floating island. Juliet resists the Montague family’s rule and falls for Romeo, bringing political conflict and romance together in an invented world.
4. Meng Qi Shi Shen
Ye Jiayao finds herself in medieval China and pursues her dream of opening a restaurant. Romance shares space with comedy, drama, and food-centered storytelling, making this a fit for viewers who want a heroine’s personal ambition alongside a period-flavored setting.
5. Saiunkoku Monogatari
Shuurei enters an imperial palace as a concubine with the task of teaching an emperor to rule. Her ambitions develop beyond that assignment as she renews her goal of becoming a court official. The story uses a fantasy world rather than identifying its setting as a specific historical Chinese dynasty.

6. Fushigi Yuugi
Miaka and her friend are drawn into a book’s world inspired by ancient China. Friendship, fantasy, and romance all shape the premise, so this is a broader adventure than a courtship story alone.
7. Akatsuki no Yona
After her father is murdered and she is betrayed, Princess Yona escapes with her childhood friend. Her journey toward becoming a leader gives the story an adventure and character-growth focus, with romance as part of a wider arc.

8. Sheng Shi Zhuang Niang
A beauty blogger’s consciousness becomes trapped in a virtual-reality game, where she faces makeup-related tasks. Its speculative game-world premise makes it a historical-romance pick only under a broad umbrella that includes fantasy settings and period aesthetics.
9. Xie Wang Zhui Qi
Su Luo is reincarnated into a medieval-China setting and becomes a fighter, accompanied by a powerful male lead. Action, martial arts, comedy, and romance combine in this Chinese animated series.

Qian Yunxi, a girl with special powers, takes her sister’s place in a marriage to a prince reputed to be cruel. The premise centers on a strong-willed heroine and the relationship that develops in a royal setting.

The list includes Chinese animated series—often marketed internationally as donghua—as well as Japanese anime. If you use “anime” to mean Japanese animation only, the Chinese titles will not fit that narrower definition. The list’s broad use of the term reflects its mix of East Asian animated works, not a claim that every entry comes from Japan.
