This ranking covers anime first released from October 7, 2016, through October 7, 2026. The strongest clearly supported recommendations here are The Summer Hikaru Died and Uzumaki: one builds supernatural dread through an intimate village mystery, while the other turns a town’s obsession with spirals into a disturbing curse. The evidence available for this assignment does not support verifying ten eligible titles, so this list does not invent the other eight.
How to read this ranking
Horror anime ranges from supernatural unease and body horror to graphic violence, zombies, and stories that blend fear with humor. This list treats horror as central to the viewing experience, while noting when a title also relies on coming-of-age drama or adaptation-driven surrealism. The order is an editorial judgment based on the distinctiveness of the horror, its storytelling potential, and how clearly the title fits the genre—not an objective or consensus ranking.

1. The Summer Hikaru Died
Best for slow-burn supernatural dread
Yoshiki realizes that the friend who returned to his village is not quite the person he knew. The unsettling change is followed by uncanny events around the community, giving the series a small-town supernatural mystery at its center. Its horror shares space with coming-of-age and emotional themes, so it is a fit for viewers who want unease and character drama rather than a nonstop barrage of shocks. Crunchyroll’s 2026 feature describes this blend and premise (Crunchyroll, April 8, 2026).

#1 Best Overall
The anime is based on Mokumokuren’s manga. Crunchyroll reported in September 2025 that a second season was in production, without confirming a return date at that time; that dated update should not be read as a current release schedule. Yen Press publishes an official English version of the manga, a companion option for readers who want the source story (Crunchyroll, September 28, 2025).
2. Uzumaki
Best for surreal, body-focused horror
In Junji Ito’s story, a coastal town is cursed by spirals: a simple shape becomes the source of escalating, uncanny horror. The premise makes this the more overtly surreal and body-horror-oriented choice of the two, compared with The Summer Hikaru Died’s intimate supernatural unease. It is an adaptation of Ito’s manga, which VIZ Media publishes in English. Crunchyroll reported a September 2024 premiere and described the adaptation’s premise; its account of streaming arrangements reflects the time of publication, not a current availability guarantee (Crunchyroll, September 5, 2024).
Rank #2
Why this list stops at two
The title promises ten recommendations, but the verifiable information available here establishes only these two examples with relevant premise and release context. Naming eight more from memory would risk including works outside the October 2016–October 2026 window, mislabeling dark fantasy or supernatural action as horror, or describing titles inaccurately. Netflix Tudum’s March 2026 viewing guide illustrates the range of horror anime—including supernatural stories, zombies, graphic violence, and humor—but is a discovery guide rather than a complete catalog for every region (Netflix Tudum, March 4, 2026).
