The Dinosaurs is a four-part Netflix documentary series that follows dinosaurs from their early origins through their extinction, with Morgan Freeman narrating and Steven Spielberg among its executive producers. It is built around a sweeping natural-history chronology and cinematic reconstruction; the available production information establishes that ambition, but not whether the images or pacing deliver on it. Consider it if you want a broad, dramatized journey through deep time. If you want a close examination of fossil evidence or a verified firsthand verdict on the visuals, this guide cannot provide that assessment.
What is The Dinosaurs about?
Netflix describes the series as a chronological account of dinosaurs, from the earliest lineage to the extinction event. Its title-page synopsis frames the story as 165 million years on Earth, while Netflix Tudum describes the opening around 235 million years ago, introducing Marasuchus. Those are two different framings in Netflix’s materials, not figures that should be collapsed into one claim about the series’ exact chronology.
Across the episodes, the subjects range from early dinosaur relatives to giant sauropods such as Mamenchisaurus, armored Stegosaurus and Ankylosaurus, predators including Allosaurus and Tyrannosaurus rex, and feathered fliers that connect the story to birds. The series moves from origins and expansion after a mass extinction through the Cretaceous world and the catastrophe that brought the dinosaurs’ age to a close.
How many episodes are in The Dinosaurs?
Netflix lists four episodes, released together on March 6, 2026. Their listed runtimes range from 44 to 48 minutes.
#1 Best Overall
| Episode | Netflix-listed runtime | Synopsis focus |
|---|---|---|
| “Rise” | 48 minutes | Dinosaur origins |
| “Conquest” | 48 minutes | Expansion after a mass extinction |
| “Empire” | 44 minutes | The Cretaceous world |
| “Fall” | 44 minutes | The final catastrophe |
The compact format suggests a wide-angle survey rather than a long treatment of every species or period. Whether the transitions make that compressed account easy to follow is a matter of viewing judgment; the runtimes alone cannot establish the pacing.
Who made and narrates the series?
Morgan Freeman narrates. Netflix credits Steven Spielberg as an executive producer and describes the project as coming from the team behind Life on Our Planet. Tudum also names Silverback Films and Industrial Light & Magic as collaborators; Amblin lists the series on its official show page. These credits place the production in the tradition of large-scale, effects-assisted natural-history documentaries, but they do not by themselves establish the scientific accuracy of any reconstruction.
The production challenge is conveying geological time as a coherent story. A June 2026 Creative Bloq feature on the visual-effects work reports that Lux Aeterna used planetary transitions to help viewers follow that scale. Showrunner Dan Tapster described the challenge as comprehension. That is useful context for the series’ visual approach, not an independent assessment of how well the finished episodes explain the evidence.
Is The Dinosaurs worth watching?
The clearest reason to watch is its scope: four episodes attempt to connect dinosaur origins, changing ecosystems, iconic animals, and extinction in one chronological arc. The roster—from Mamenchisaurus to Tyrannosaurus rex—also gives the series a broad range of creatures to follow. For viewers who want an accessible, narrated overview with visual reconstructions, that is a promising premise.

Rank #3
The main trade-off is breadth versus depth. A series covering such a long span in four episodes has limited room for extended attention to individual species, competing interpretations, or how fossils support a reconstruction. Netflix and Amblin present it as a cinematic natural-history documentary, but the available sources do not establish whether it consistently explains the evidence behind its imagery, how the episodes feel in practice, or whether its visual style is unusually intense. Those are important questions for a review, and they cannot be settled from credits and promotional descriptions alone.
Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 100% Tomatometer from 10 critic reviews and a 75% Popcornmeter from more than 100 audience ratings when accessed on October 4, 2026. Those are time-sensitive platform aggregates with different sample sizes; they are a limited reception snapshot, not a substitute for an episode-by-episode account of what critics or viewers praised.
Rank #4
Is The Dinosaurs suitable for kids?
Netflix categorizes the series under family programming, nature, and science documentaries, and provides a downloadable activity guide for children ages 6–10. However, Netflix’s title-page snapshot for the Polish market showed a 10+ marker. Ratings and availability can vary by market, so check the rating shown on your local Netflix title page before deciding whether it suits a child. The family category and activity guide do not, on their own, establish how intense particular scenes may feel to younger viewers.
