The list moves from direct enemies-to-lovers romances to looser rivals-to-lovers picks and thrillers where forced proximity or deception matters more than a conventional romantic arc. Use the conflict and tone to find the right watch, and note that a few titles involve difficult dynamics or mature content.

Direct enemies-to-lovers romances
Pride & Prejudice (2005)
For a slow, emotionally earnest period romance, Joe Wright’s adaptation centers Lizzy Bennet and Mr. Darcy as stubborn people who form poor impressions of one another and then have to reconsider them. The friction is less about a scheme or danger than about pride, judgment, and the discomfort of realizing you may have misread someone.

10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
This sharp teen comedy loosely adapts Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. Kat distrusts Patrick’s attention because it begins as part of a paid scheme, giving their guarded exteriors a concrete reason to clash. Rotten Tomatoes’ critic consensus praises Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger’s performances and the script’s wit, while describing the film as rising above typical teen fare.
Beauty and the Beast (1991)
The animated fantasy turns hostility into affection, making it a recognizable enemies-to-lovers story for viewers who want romance wrapped in fairy-tale spectacle. Its starting point is captivity and a marked power imbalance, however, so the change in feeling should not be mistaken for evidence that coercion itself is romantic.

Overboard (1987)
This broad comedy begins with antagonism and develops a romance through a premise built on deception and coercion. That setup is central to the film’s conflict, not a minor wrinkle; choose it with that dynamic in mind rather than expecting a straightforward modern rom-com.
Workplace rivals and anonymous messages
You’ve Got Mail (1998)
A small independent bookseller resents the chain bookstore opening nearby—and its owner—while anonymous online correspondence complicates what she thinks she knows about him. The workplace rivalry gives this cozy romance its initial spark; the parallel private connection makes it less a story of sustained hostility than of assumptions gradually coming undone.
Rank #2
The Shop Around the Corner (1940)
For the classic version of the workplace-and-anonymous-correspondence setup, watch this film alongside You’ve Got Mail. It offers a useful contrast in setting and era while keeping the appeal of two people who are prickly with each other face to face and drawn together through messages they do not realize are from one another.
When friction gives way to something else
When Harry Met Sally (1989)
This is a looser fit for the trope: Harry and Sally’s personalities clash when they first meet, but the story’s appeal lies in repeated encounters and a gradual friendship over years, not instant enmity. Pick it for a relationship that changes through familiarity and conversation rather than a sharp conversion from hate to love.
La La Land (2016)
The leads begin with irritation and friction before entering a relationship, so the film suits viewers who want an initial spark of conflict in a musical-drama setting. Its ending is bittersweet rather than a simple happily-ever-after, making it a better choice for a romance that leaves emotional complexity in the foreground.
Thrillers and mature variations
The 39 Steps (1935)
Choose this adjacent pick if you want a spy thriller more than a conventional romance. Distrust and forced proximity shape the pair’s dynamic as danger drives the story, but romance is not the film’s defining promise.
Rank #4
The Handmaiden (2016)
Park Chan-wook’s Korean psychological thriller turns deception and shifting loyalties into a twist-heavy story of forbidden sapphic love. It is erotic and psychologically intense, a very different viewing experience from a light romantic comedy; approach it for mature thriller drama rather than comfort-watch sweetness.
