Diego Luna’s best work moves between Mexican cinema, Hollywood films and ambitious television. This ranking weighs career significance, the distinctiveness of his performance, range across genres and formats, and how well each title works as an entry point for a new viewer. It is an argued watchlist, not a definitive verdict: the exact order is editorial, and Luna’s career includes more than these ten selections.

1. Y tu mamá también (2001)

Start here for the role that established Luna as a star. In Alfonso Cuarón’s Spanish-language Mexican road film, he plays Tenoch, one half of a restless teenage friendship that is tested on a trip with an older woman. The film’s humor and sunlit journey gradually give way to a sharper portrait of class, desire and change. Luna’s rapport with co-star Gael García Bernal is central to its appeal.

Mexico’s Secretaría de Cultura identifies the film as the work that brought Luna to stardom, while Criterion lists him as Tenoch and gives the film a 106-minute runtime. For a viewer new to Luna, it offers both a major career milestone and a vivid example of Mexican cinema. Secretaría de Cultura; Criterion.

2. Andor

Luna’s strongest long-form showcase is this political science-fiction series, in which he reprises Cassian Andor before the events of Rogue One. The format gives the character room to change over time, while the story attends to the people and pressures that make resistance possible—not just a single hero’s choices.

#1 Best Overall
Abel Original Mexican Blu Ray By Diego Luna
  • Diego Luna
  • Christopher Ruíz-Esparza

Luna described the show as a collective story: “This isn’t about one person, but how a revolution is born. It’s about many people and the work of a team, about a community and their cause.” The Television Academy published the interview in 2022. Lucasfilm identifies Tony Gilroy as the creator and says all episodes stream on Disney+; availability may vary by country. Television Academy; Lucasfilm’s Andor page.

3. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)

This is the natural feature-film companion to Andor: Luna plays Cassian in a story set later in the character’s life, with the stakes and scope of a large-scale ensemble adventure. It is the more accessible choice if you want a complete film rather than a serialized drama, and it shows how Luna fits into a cast-driven blockbuster without losing the character’s wary edge.

Disney lists the film’s release date as December 16, 2016, its rating as PG-13 and its runtime as 2 hours 14 minutes. Luna has said of the connection between the stories, “If you like Rogue One, you’re going to realize there’s so much you didn’t know.” Disney; StarWars.com.

4. Narcos: México

In this crime series, Luna plays Félix Gallardo, a drug-trafficking figure whose rise gives the show a tense center of gravity. It is a substantial change of register from the earnest, younger characters that made him widely known: controlled, calculating and difficult to read. The role is a useful way to see Luna carry a serialized crime drama rather than a single film.

5. Milk (2008)

This biographical drama about Harvey Milk’s political life gives Luna a supporting role in an ensemble led by Sean Penn. It is a good pick for viewers interested in contemporary American history and character drama, and a reminder that Luna’s international film career has included carefully observed supporting work as well as headline roles.

GQ México’s retrospective discusses the film, and Rotten Tomatoes lists it in Luna’s filmography. Those listings establish it as part of his career, not a definitive measure of its place above or below other titles. GQ México; Rotten Tomatoes.

6. Abel (2010)

Luna moves behind the camera as director of this Mexican drama, while also acting in it. The story centers on a boy who returns home after time away and takes on an unsettling role within his family. Its intimate scale makes it a useful counterpoint to Luna’s better-known studio films: here, the draw is the family dynamic and the uneasy premise rather than spectacle.

7. Nicotina (2003)

This Mexican crime comedy-thriller puts Luna in an early-career ensemble story built around a botched transaction and the chain reaction it sets off. Its compact, urban crime setup offers a different route into his Mexican-language work than the coming-of-age sweep of Y tu mamá también. Choose it if you want something brisker and more genre-driven.

8. The Terminal (2004)

In Steven Spielberg’s airport-set comedy-drama, Luna plays Enrique Cruz, a food-service worker who becomes involved in the life of Viktor Navorski, played by Tom Hanks. It is a supporting turn in a broad studio production, and a useful example of Luna working inside a warm, accessible ensemble comedy rather than a Mexican drama or a franchise action film.

9. Elysium (2013)

This science-fiction action film casts Luna as Julio, a friend who helps Max, played by Matt Damon, pursue a dangerous mission in a sharply divided future. It is a supporting role in a high-concept studio movie, making it a worthwhile stop for viewers who want to see Luna in action-oriented science fiction outside Star Wars.

10. Blood Father (2016)

This lean action thriller pairs Luna with Mel Gibson in a story about a father trying to protect his estranged daughter. Luna plays a supporting antagonist, adding a harder, more threatening edge to a film built around pursuit and survival. It rounds out the list with a compact action pick rather than another expansive drama or franchise chapter.

Where to start with Diego Luna

  • For his breakthrough and Mexican cinema: Y tu mamá también.
  • For a sustained lead performance: Andor.
  • For a single Star Wars film: Rogue One.
  • For crime drama: Narcos: México.
  • For a glimpse of Luna directing: Abel.

The ranking moves from a defining early film through television leads and international supporting roles. Its purpose is to make choosing a first or next watch easier—not to claim that the tenth title is the least worthy project in Luna’s career.
