The best anime RPG depends on the kind of adventure you want: Persona 5 Royal is the strongest all-round blend of social simulation and supernatural dungeon crawling, while the rest of this list includes turn-based fantasy, real-time action, tactical battles, and co-op. This ranking weighs combat, story and character focus, exploration, accessibility, and platform reach; it is an editorial selection, not an industry-wide consensus.
“Anime RPG” is a practical label for games that pair role-playing systems with anime-influenced presentation or storytelling, not a strict genre or a guarantee that a game was made in Japan. PlayStation notes that JRPG boundaries have blurred and that the genre now spans tactical and action subgenres. The games below are ranked for their distinct strengths, with a tradeoff noted for each so you can choose by fit rather than assume one style is best.
10. Octopath Traveler II
Best for: Players who want a turn-based fantasy journey with a striking visual identity and multiple protagonists.
Eight protagonists and HD-2D visuals give Octopath Traveler II a distinctive place among modern role-playing games. Its turn-based focus suits players who prefer planning actions over reflex-driven combat.

- Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a gothic horror action side-scrolling RPG set in 9th century England. A paranormal force has summoned a demon-infested castle, revealing crystal shards infused with tremendous magical power.
- Play as Miriam, an orphan scarred by an alchemist's curse which slowly crystallizes her body. To save humanity, and herself in the process, Miriam must fight through the castle and defeat the summoner, Gebel. Collect, craft, and unlock a vast array of weapons, equipment and loot to defeat the countless minions and bosses of hell that await!
- Unlock spells and powers, find, craft, and upgrade several types of weapons and special items to change Miriam's appearance, and mix and match gear and abilities to find your playstyle.
- Bloodstained's game world is the biggest of Koji Igarashi's entire career, with a map size almost 2x as big as Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Aside from the enigmatic Miriam, there are secret playable characters awaiting discovery.
- With music by Michiru Yamane and Ippo Yamada, respectively, veterans of the Castlevania franchise and Capcom brand, Bloodstained's music is an unforgettable experience.
Tradeoff: Its eight-character structure offers variety, but may feel less centered on one lead and a single continuous party story than a more tightly focused adventure.
9. Persona 4 Golden
Best for: Players who value friendships, character bonds, and a supernatural mystery as much as combat.
Persona 4 Golden puts its characters and social connections at the center, alongside battles using supernatural Personas. It is a natural pick if the appeal of Persona 5 Royal is its balance of everyday relationships and fantasy stakes.
Tradeoff: Its character-and-bond focus means it is not the best match for someone looking mainly for nonstop action or a combat-first RPG.

8. Granblue Fantasy: Relink
Best for: Players seeking real-time party combat, especially those who want the option to play with friends.
This action RPG centers on a four-character party and supports solo play or co-op for up to four players. Its immediate combat and cooperative option make it the list’s clearest choice for shared action.

- ANNO: Mutationem is an action-adventure game with RPG elements set in a cyberpunk world, featuring a unique mix of pixelated 2D & 3D graphic style with a rich, dark and bizarre plot.
- Unique 2D-to-3D gameplay, seamless switching between 2D Action n' Platforming and 3D Exploration to interact with the world and its inhabitants. Let's dive into pixel gaming from another perspective!
- Ann will slash, shoot, combo, grenade-throw & ground-pound her way through hordes of enemies and huge bosses. From great swords to double blades, from pistols to rocket launchers and uppercuts, time to become the one-girl army you always knew you had in you.
- A grand story, befitting a rich and dark cyberpunk décor, featuring our main hero Ann Flores and her trusty hyper hacker side-kick Ayane on a personal mission to find out where her missing brother has gone to. Little do the two know just what they will unravel…
- Collect, buy or craft items & upgrade Ann's stats, skills and gear. Use chips to modify any kind of weapon you find. Equip Ann and make her combat-ready for all enemies (both humanoid and not…) that are about to head her way. "
Tradeoff: Its party action is a different draw from long-form social simulation or a primarily turn-based, story-led adventure.
7. Unicorn Overlord
Best for: Strategy-minded players who want a tactical RPG with a broad recruitable cast.
Unicorn Overlord is built around turn-based battles and recruiting a large cast. It earns its place for offering a strategy-first alternative to the more familiar action and command-based formats on this list.
Tradeoff: Its tactical emphasis is a poor fit if you want direct, fast-paced action combat rather than carefully considered battles.
6. NieR:Automata
Best for: Players who want science-fiction action and a story that does not follow a straightforward path.
With android protagonists, nonlinear storytelling, and a mix of melee, ranged, and hacking abilities, NieR:Automata stands apart from the fantasy-heavy entries. Its unusual narrative approach is a major part of its appeal.
Rank #3
Tradeoff: The nonlinear structure may be less satisfying for players who prefer a conventional, linear story.
5. Metaphor: ReFantazio
Best for: Fantasy RPG fans interested in party-building, character bonds, and magical abilities.
Metaphor: ReFantazio combines a fantasy setting with party development, bonds, and powers called Archetypes. It is a strong option for players who want those relationship and progression systems in a world distinct from a contemporary school setting.
Tradeoff: Its appeal is tied to fantasy-world exploration and party systems, rather than the everyday social-life contrast that defines the Persona games here.
4. Tales of Arise
Best for: Players who want a character-led fantasy story with action-oriented combat.
PlayStation describes Tales of Arise as a story-focused adventure with a diverse cast and intuitive, rewarding combat. It is the list’s clearest recommendation for someone who wants an action RPG without giving up a strong ensemble and narrative focus.

1. Persona 5 Royal
Best for: Players who want daily school-life decisions, close character relationships, dungeon exploration, and supernatural combat in one game.
Persona 5 Royal takes the top spot for the breadth of its central blend: managing school-day commitments, living as a Phantom Thief, crawling through dungeons, and capturing monsters. PlayStation also highlights added content and quality-of-life updates, while GameSpot likewise describes its combination of school life and Phantom Thief activity. If those systems sound appealing, the official ATLUS site lists physical Standard and Collector’s Edition options and identifies platforms including PS5 and Nintendo Switch; regional stock and retailer listings can vary.
Tradeoff: Its school-life schedule and social systems are a substantial part of the experience, so it is not the best match for someone seeking a direct, combat-only action RPG.
