The best ’90s Christmas movies range from family slapstick to Dickensian musical, stop-motion fantasy, romance and darker comedy. This ranking is an editorial selection, not an objective industry consensus: the order weighs how central Christmas is to each film, its craft and rewatch appeal, and who is likely to enjoy it.

How this ranking works

A film earns a place if Christmas is central to its plot, setting or lasting seasonal identity. The list favors variety as well as rewatchability, so a broad crowd-pleaser can rank above a more unusual genre pick. AFI’s Holiday Movie Guide and BFI’s curated Christmas-film selection include titles from the decade, but neither establishes a definitive ranking of ’90s Christmas movies.

The 10 best ’90s Christmas movies

1. Home Alone (1990)

Director: Chris Columbus. When his family leaves on a Christmas trip without him, young Kevin McCallister has to defend the house from burglars. Christmas is more than a backdrop: the family’s holiday travel triggers the story, and the decorations and seasonal setting frame its escalating slapstick. It leads this list for its easy-to-follow comic premise and broad family appeal, though the burglars’ elaborate pratfalls make it a better fit for viewers who enjoy cartoonish peril. 20th Century Studios’ synopsis confirms the setup; AFI also lists the film as a holiday selection and identifies Columbus as director and John Hughes as writer.

2. The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)

Director: Brian Henson. The Muppets retell Dickens’s story of Ebenezer Scrooge and his Christmas Eve transformation, with Gonzo serving as Charles Dickens alongside Rizzo. That framing lets the film play as both a faithful holiday story and a comic Muppet performance. It ranks near the top for making the Christmas plot inseparable from its identity while offering a warm, musical choice for families and Dickens fans. Disney lists it as a comedy, drama, family, fantasy, holiday and musical film. BFI also highlights its close alignment with Dickens and its narrator device. Disney’s film page and BFI’s year-by-year Christmas-film feature provide more detail.

3. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Director: Henry Selick. Halloween Town’s Pumpkin King, Jack Skellington, discovers Christmas and tries to bring the holiday to his own world. Its stop-motion fantasy, musical storytelling and collision of spooky imagery with Christmas traditions give it a distinct seasonal flavor. Is it a Christmas movie? Yes: Christmas is central to Jack’s plan and the film’s identity, even though Halloween remains equally important to its world and tone. A strong pick for viewers who want holiday viewing with a gothic edge rather than conventional coziness. Disney’s official page dates the release to October 13, 1993 and describes Jack’s Christmas project.

4. The Santa Clause (1994)

Director: John Pasquin. After the previous Santa falls from Scott Calvin’s roof on Christmas Eve, Scott finds himself on an unexpected path toward becoming Santa Claus. The premise makes the holiday’s central figure the engine of a family comedy, with an escalating transformation at its heart. It is an accessible choice for families and viewers who like a high-concept Santa story. Disney’s official synopsis describes the setup and gives the release date as November 11, 1994.

5. While You Were Sleeping (1995)

Director: Jon Turteltaub. This romantic comedy follows a lonely transit worker whose mistaken identity draws her into the family life of a man in a coma. Its Christmas-season setting gives the story a wintry, family-centered atmosphere, while romance and misunderstanding—not a Santa or gift-giving plot—drive the comedy. Choose it for a gentler, more adult-leaning holiday watch than the list’s slapstick entries.

6. Jingle All the Way (1996)

Director: Brian Levant. A father races around in search of the hard-to-find toy he promised his son for Christmas. The frantic shopping quest makes seasonal pressure the whole premise, and its comic energy suits viewers who like broad, chaotic family comedy. 20th Century Studios’ synopsis confirms the toy hunt and dates the film to November 22, 1996.

  • Keep Score This Christmas: Featured on Good Morning America. Your family argues over the holidays anyway, so make it a game. Cards are worth 1 to 5 points, and any player can steal your discards when they show up later. Loser does the dishes.
  • Easy Family Christmas Games: If you can read, you can play. Learn it in a minute. For 1 to 4 players ages 8+, with a solo mode for the one who watches alone. Little ones can team up with a parent. Add the Expansion Pack for up to 8 players. Eyes on the screen, not on phones.

7. Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992)

Director: Chris Columbus. Kevin is separated from his family again, this time in New York City, where he encounters the same burglars. The sequel shifts the holiday setting from a suburban house to a decorated city, preserving the original’s physical comedy while expanding its playground. It is an easy follow-up for fans of the first film, although its appeal depends more on revisiting that familiar formula than on offering a new kind of Christmas story.

8. The Ref (1994)

Director: Ted Demme. A burglar takes a bickering couple hostage on Christmas Eve, then finds himself caught in their family tensions. The holiday is essential to the setup, but the comedy is sharp-edged and adult rather than sentimental. It belongs here as an alternative for viewers who want a cynical, less conventional seasonal film.

9. Batman Returns (1992)

Director: Tim Burton. Batman faces the Penguin and Catwoman in a dark, wintry Gotham during the Christmas season. Christmas is chiefly the setting and visual atmosphere, not the story’s central problem, making this a more borderline entry than the holiday comedies and adaptations above. Its gothic superhero tone makes it a good choice for viewers who want seasonal mood without a traditional Christmas plot.

10. I’ll Be Home for Christmas (1998)

Director: Arlene Sanford. College student Jake Wilkinson tries to make it home in time for Christmas dinner. Its holiday deadline drives the journey, making it a straightforward fit for a seasonal list, though it ranks lower here than the entries with more distinctive premises or styles. It suits viewers looking for a light late-’90s family comedy. Disney’s official page confirms the premise and dates the release to November 13, 1998.
