The Challenge showrunner Justin Booth said building Season 40 around 40 competitors changed how the production handled casting, games and logistics. The milestone season grouped the cast into four eras, opened with an Era Invitational and premiered August 14, 2024.
Who is the showrunner for The Challenge Season 40?
Justin Booth is the longtime showrunner interviewed about The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras. In an August 14, 2024 interview with Andy Greene for Yahoo Entertainment, Booth described the production demands of assembling a cast four times the size of a typical era grouping. The season’s scale affected both the games and the logistics of filming, he said.
Why did Season 40 divide competitors into eras?
Paramount’s official announcement describes 40 competitors representing the franchise’s 26-year history, divided into four Challenge Eras. Booth called the era split “a very obvious choice,” while noting that casting enough available alumni from the earliest eras was a concern.
He said production sought popular alumni and wanted the 40th season to feel special. Availability was a constraint: some former competitors faced scheduling conflicts or could not commit to eight weeks. These are Booth’s descriptions of the casting process, not independent measurements of popularity or a complete account of who was considered.

What did the Era Invitational do?
The season began with an Era Invitational. According to Paramount’s announcement, competitors first had to eliminate weaker links within their own era; the strongest then earned a place on the team. That opening structure made each era’s selection part of the competition before the larger team phase began.
The official Paramount+ episode guide describes a season that moves from the invitational into team competition, then later into individual competition, and concludes with a two-part reunion.

How did 40 competitors change filming and challenge design?
Booth said the cast’s size required “a massive adaptation to the way that we do things,” affecting games and production logistics. In his interview, he described a production group of about 250 people moving to challenge locations. That is Booth’s stated figure, not an independently audited headcount.
Location planning
Booth said location decisions weigh security, affordability and production value. For filming in Vietnam, he described early starts to avoid midday heat, complicated movement for the production group and long challenge days. He also noted the difficulty of changing plans when a location becomes unavailable.

His account suggests the larger format was not simply a matter of adding more contestants: it influenced how challenges were designed and how production scheduled and moved people.
