The episode does not show what happens immediately after the shot. The second scene shifts the story’s perspective and timeline; it is not a resolution to the theater standoff.
What happens at the end of The Last of Us Season 2?
In the final theater sequence, Abby confronts Ellie and her group. A shot is heard as the image cuts to black, leaving the immediate outcome unclear. The finale then returns with Abby waking at WLF headquarters. A title card reads “Seattle, Day One,” establishing that the next scene goes back to the beginning of the Seattle period from Abby’s point of view.
Those are two different ending beats: the theater scene creates suspense by withholding an answer, while Abby’s scene resets the perspective and signals where the story will go next. The finale aired May 25, 2025, as reported in TheWrap’s coverage.
Is Ellie dead? Who fired the shot?
The television episode does not establish either answer. It cuts away at the sound of the shot and does not show the theater confrontation continuing afterward. So the most accurate answer for a show-only viewer is that Ellie’s immediate fate and the shooter are left unresolved onscreen.

The moment can feel like a character-death cliffhanger because of its timing, but calling it a “phony cliffhanger” is an interpretation of how the sequence works, not a quoted description from the creators. The finale suspends the theater outcome, then pivots to a different point of view instead of resolving the suspense. TechRadar’s ending explainer likewise describes the uncertainty around the shot and the shift that follows.
What does “Seattle, Day One” mean?
The card marks a return to the start of the Seattle timeline, now following Abby rather than Ellie. It is a perspective change, not a flash-forward that explains the shot. Sky’s recap identifies the Abby scene as the finale’s turn toward her side of the story.

That structure asks viewers to revisit the same period through another character’s experience. The episode itself does not provide the theater scene’s immediate aftermath before making that shift. Viewers who know the game may recognize what the series is adapting, but that knowledge is distinct from what this episode explicitly shows.
Why did the season end there?
Co-creator and showrunner Craig Mazin told Bell Media that the intended emotional position was an in-between one: “What I want the audience to feel thematically at the end of the season is that they aren’t where they were, but they’re not yet where they are going to go.” He added: “There has always been a story that we’ve been telling about the good and bad of love, but we switch which side is good and bad sometimes.” Those comments frame the finale as a transition that unsettles viewers’ loyalties rather than closes the conflict neatly. Bell Media’s interview contains the full discussion.

Mazin said the team considered other stopping points: “Honestly, we were open to a different ending. We talked about it a lot. We considered everything. And then in the end, I just remember saying, ‘isn’t this part of the genetics of how this story functions?’” He also said, “Now, what it means is, we have to take risks as a television show, and HBO has to back us taking risks.” Neil Druckmann explained to TheWrap that ending a few moments earlier would not make the right promise about the story’s scope and its continuing connection to Joel and Ellie: “Had we ended the season somewhere else, like a few moments before, I think that we wouldn’t be making the right promise of what this is about.”
Is there a post-credits scene?
No. Abby waking at WLF headquarters is part of the episode’s ending before the credits, not a mid-credits or post-credits scene, according to TechRadar.

How the finale connects to the game
The HBO series adapts The Last of Us Part II, the game’s story of Ellie and Abby. Sony’s game overview is available at PlayStation. For readers who want to experience that source story, Sony lists a physical PS5 edition called The Last of Us Part II Remastered; it is specifically a PS5 disc game, not a required companion to understanding the television episode. See PlayStation Direct’s PS5 disc listing.
