The Bikeriders is inspired by real people and records, but it is not a documentary or a literal account of the Chicago Outlaws Motorcycle Club. Writer-director Jeff Nichols built his fictional Vandals around Danny Lyon’s photographs, interviews and anecdotes in the photobook The Bikeriders.
What real story inspired The Bikeriders?
Danny Lyon’s photobook The Bikeriders documents the Chicago motorcycle scene, including members of the real Outlaws Motorcycle Club. Its photographs and interviews became the central source for Nichols’ film. Lyon rode with the Chicago Outlaws while photographing and interviewing them, and the book also shows a wider riding world that included dirt-track racing.
For Nichols, the combination mattered. In a 2024 BFI interview, he said the photographs could appear “romantic and cool looking,” while the interviews were “unvarnished” and sometimes cruel. The images offered a sense of the riders’ world; their own words gave him a way to understand the people inside it. Nichols also described the interviews to PBS as an “ingredient list” for writing about a subculture.
Nichols said he approached Lyon about making a film in 2014. Rather than recount the Outlaws’ club history, he wanted to create a story that conveyed a particular period, the pull of belonging and the rise and unraveling of a group. (BFI interview; PBS, On Story)

What is real, and what did Nichols invent?
The real foundation is Lyon’s record of Chicago riders and the Outlaws he documented. The film’s club, however, is called the Vandals. It is fictional, loosely inspired by the Outlaws, and should not be treated as another name for the real club or as a documentary reconstruction of its history.
| In Lyon’s source material | In Nichols’ film |
|---|---|
| Photographs, interviews and anecdotes documenting real Chicago riders, including Outlaws members. | A fictional Vandals club and a dramatic story shaped from that material. |
| Real people and words that could inform characters and dialogue. | Characters could be changed or combined; the screenplay does not promise one-to-one portraits. |
| A real woman named Kathy whom Lyon interviewed. | A fictionalized Kathy whose romance and much of her personal story Nichols said he invented. |
Nichols told PBS, “This is a romanticized version of what information I had in the book.” The distinction is especially important for Kathy. Some of the film character’s dialogue came from Lyon’s book, but Nichols explicitly said the movie does not portray the real woman’s life: “But this is not that woman’s life.” The romance and love triangle are part of the screenplay, not a factual account of the real Kathy and Benny.

Producers Guild reporting likewise describes interviews and anecdotes from Lyon’s book being woven into the script. TIME’s account discusses characters inspired by real people, but Nichols’ own explanation is the clearest guide to the boundary: the film draws on real material while creating its own dramatic narrative. Why the story feels like a beginning and an ending
Nichols was drawn not only to the riders’ look, but to Lyon’s later reflection on a way of life bound to a particular place and time. He saw in the book a beginning, middle and end: a subculture that could not simply be recovered once its moment had passed. That sense of loss helped shape the film’s mood, which Nichols described as both beautiful and sad.

How biker movies shaped the film’s world
The film’s cultural references loop back into the history it portrays. Nichols discussed The Wild One (1953), Easy Rider (1969) and Scorpio Rising (1963) in his BFI interview. He said Lyon’s book recounts that a real club founder took inspiration from Marlon Brando’s biker image in The Wild One. That is Nichols describing an anecdote in the book, not an independently established account of the club’s origins.
In Nichols’ telling, later generations also drew on screen images of biker rebellion. He studied Scorpio Rising for its bikes and music, while The Wild One and Easy Rider are more overtly represented in the film. The references underline the way the idea of the biker has been shaped by both lived experience and popular culture. (BFI interview)

Where to see the material Nichols adapted
Lyon’s photobook The Bikeriders is the direct way to encounter the photographs and interviews behind the film. Reading it alongside the movie makes the adaptation’s distinction easier to see: the book preserves the riders’ images and voices, while Nichols uses that record as the starting point for fiction.
