Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is the new The Big Bang Theory spin-off at HBO Max. Warner Bros. Discovery ordered the series on July 9, 2025, and revealed a multiverse-disaster premise centered on Stuart Bloom. Its announced first season premiered July 23, 2026.
What is the spin-off about?
Stuart Bloom, the comic-book-store owner played by Kevin Sussman in The Big Bang Theory, is at the center of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe. The official premise begins when Stuart breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard. The accident triggers a multiverse crisis described as an Armageddon, leaving Stuart and his companions to try to repair the damage.
Stuart is joined by his girlfriend Denise, geologist Bert, and quantum physicist Barry Kripke. Along the way, the group encounters alternate-universe versions of familiar characters from the original series. The setup takes the franchise beyond its usual sitcom surroundings into science-fiction territory, while keeping a supporting character from the parent show as its lead.

When did it premiere, and where can it be watched?
Warner Bros. Discovery announced a ten-episode first season with a July 23, 2026 debut on HBO Max. The announced schedule called for new episodes on Thursdays after the premiere. That date has passed; this is the schedule the company announced, not a forthcoming release date. Regional catalog availability has not been established here.
What was the “massive update”?
The headline refers to the project’s move from development to a series order, announced on July 9, 2025, together with the central plot details and cast. It does not describe a new announcement made in 2026. HBO and HBO Max Content chief Casey Bloys said the series would continue The Big Bang Theory legacy, while Lorre described the project as a chance to do something “radical” and move outside his comfort zone.
