The decision came after the women presented competing accounts of a conflict in the house; Joey said he could not know the full truth of those accounts and ultimately chose based on his connection.
What happened on Joey’s Malta two-on-one?
In season 28, episode 4, the cast traveled to Malta. While Lexi had a separate one-on-one date and the group date took on a medieval combat theme, Maria and Sydney received the two-on-one date card. They boarded a yacht, and Joey joined them for an outing toward the Blue Grotto.

The date put the tension between the two women in front of Joey. Their disagreement centered on Maria’s behavior toward other contestants and on how events in the house had been described.
What did Maria and Sydney say about the conflict?
Sydney used her conversation with Joey to criticize Maria’s conduct and recount alleged incidents. Maria disputed one of Sydney’s claims, said she wanted to focus on her relationship with Joey, and challenged Sydney’s account.

Those are the contestants’ accounts as presented in an edited reality-TV episode and summarized by ABC7’s February 13, 2024 recap. The recap does not independently establish which account was accurate.
Why did Joey choose Maria?
During the evening portion of the date, Joey asked both women to explain their connection with him. He gave Maria the rose and walked Sydney out. His choice was based on his personal connection, rather than a finding that one woman’s account of the house dispute had been proven.

The next day, Joey told the group that his connection with Sydney was not as strong and that sending her home had not been easy.
Was Maria Joey’s final choice?
No. This was an early-season elimination, not Joey’s finale decision. ABC’s official finale article, published March 26, 2024, identifies Daisy Kent and Kelsey Anderson as the two remaining women in season 28, episode 11. Maria’s rose on the Malta date did not make her one of Joey’s final two.
