Screenwriter Gabe Sherman has said he researched the Trump–Roy Cohn era through interviews, books and contemporaneous reporting, while also imagining private conversations and compressing events. That distinction matters: some scenes closely follow accounts Sherman says were reported at the time; others are inventions or dramatizations.
Is The Apprentice based on a true story?
Yes, in the sense that Ali Abbasi’s 2024 film follows Donald Trump’s New York real-estate career and his relationship with lawyer Roy Cohn in the 1970s and 1980s, drawing on real people and reported events. But Sherman has described the film as his interpretation and a work of fiction, not a record of every conversation or scene. In a BFI interview, he said he spoke with people who worked with Trump and Cohn, and read books and articles about them, particularly contemporaneous accounts from the 1970s and 1980s. He also said private dialogue had to be imagined because no recordings of the two men together existed, and that events were compressed for time.
That makes “true story” a useful starting point, but not a verdict on each scene. The strongest clues are how Sherman describes a scene’s basis, what contemporaneous reporting or records establish, and whether later recollections or qualifications complicate the account.
Which scenes in The Apprentice are true?
The prenup negotiation
The film’s prenuptial-agreement sequence is among the scenes Sherman says he grounded closely in reported events. As recounted by Vanity Fair, Sherman said Cohn took charge of Trump’s prenup shortly before Trump’s wedding to Ivana, the negotiation nearly derailed the wedding, and Ivana demanded a $100,000 signing bonus. Sherman described the scene as “almost verbatim dramatized” from what had happened and said he tried to write what had been reported at the time.

This is Sherman’s account of the scene’s basis, not a claim that the finished sequence reproduces a verified transcript line for line. The reported amount and negotiation should be attributed to that account.
The cufflinks and Cohn’s illness
MovieMaker’s fact-check separates several claims behind the cufflink episode. Director Ali Abbasi said the gift was based on a real event. The suggestion that the cufflinks were knockoffs came from Cohn’s former partner after Cohn’s death; Abbasi said he could not confirm whether Cohn knew that while alive.

The film also depicts Cohn dying of AIDS. Cohn publicly denied having AIDS and said he had liver cancer, while reported death-certificate details support an AIDS-related illness. Those are distinct layers of evidence: the public denial, the documentary record cited in reporting, and what the film dramatizes.
The Department of Justice blackmail scene
The scene in which Cohn blackmails a Department of Justice official with compromising photographs was made up, Sherman acknowledged to MovieMaker. He explained that the film was art rather than journalism and that the scene was meant to dramatize strategies attributed to Cohn. It should not be read as proof that this particular blackmail episode occurred.

The Ivana Trump allegation
The film depicts a sexual assault allegation involving Ivana Trump, a subject that requires more care than a simple true-or-false label. Ivana described an experience as rape in a 1990 divorce deposition. She later said she felt violated but did not intend her wording to be interpreted literally or criminally; reporting also records a statement she made in 2015. Trump denied ever raping her. MovieMaker and the BFI programme notes discuss these qualifications. The deposition is an account she gave, not a legal finding that the allegation was proven.
What was researched, imagined or left out?
Sherman’s account of his method helps explain why the film can draw on history without serving as a documentary. In the BFI interview, he said he used interviews with people who worked with Trump and Cohn, along with books and reporting. He also made clear that private exchanges were imagined and that some events were compressed. His own description is explicit: “This is my interpretation of them as characters. Obviously, it’s based on real events, but it’s a work of fiction.”

One striking image that did not make the final cut was a rat-and-cat story associated with the Commodore Hotel demolition. In a Writers Guild of America East interview, Sherman said he had read about rats at the demolition and that the image haunted him while writing. He clarified that it did not become a scene in the released film. The anecdote helps explain the horror-like atmosphere he sought for 1970s New York, but it is not one of the movie’s scenes.

When a scene feels especially outrageous, ask what kind of support it has rather than assuming the wildest moments must be the most factual:

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Contemporaneous accounts or records: These can provide a firmer basis than a later recollection, though they still need to be read in context.
- Who is making the claim: Distinguish Sherman’s explanation of his adaptation from what a document, participant or secondary report independently establishes.
- How the writer characterizes the scene: Sherman has identified material as reported, compressed, imagined or invented. Those categories are not interchangeable.
- Later qualifications and denials: For contested claims, include the original account and relevant later clarification or denial; do not turn an allegation into a finding.
For the prenup, Sherman says the scene closely tracks accounts he found. For the DOJ blackmail episode, he acknowledged invention. The private dialogue throughout the film is necessarily imagined, and the cufflink story includes uncertainty about what Cohn knew. Those differences are central to understanding what the film claims—and what it does not.
