In May 2024, Donald Trump’s legal team reportedly sent a cease-and-desist letter to the producers of Ali Abbasi’s film The Apprentice while the movie was seeking distribution deals at Cannes. The letter accused the filmmakers of defamation and illegal election interference, according to The Washington Post’s account. Those were allegations in a legal warning—not findings by a court. The film later opened theatrically in the United States in October 2024.
What did Trump’s letter reportedly say?
On May 24, 2024, The Washington Post reported that it had obtained the letter. Its account said Trump’s legal team accused the filmmakers of defamation and illegal election interference. The film is a docudrama about Trump’s rise as a New York real estate figure in the 1970s and 1980s.
The allegations should be understood as the letter’s claims, not as established facts or a court ruling. The original letter is not reproduced in the available reporting cited here.
How did the producers respond?
TheWrap reported that the producers defended the film in a statement: “The film is a fair and balanced portrait of the former president. We want everyone to see it and then decide.” The statement expressed the filmmakers’ position; it is not an independent assessment of the movie.

Did the letter stop the film from being released?
No. The letter was reported while the film was seeking potential distribution deals from Cannes, and The Associated Press later said the movie had not been picked up there in May. AP described the letter as surely one factor in that outcome, not the sole cause. The reporting does not establish that the letter legally blocked a release.
In October 2024, Briarcliff Entertainment announced a U.S. theatrical opening for The Apprentice. The dispute therefore did not prevent the film from reaching U.S. theaters.
