Your Friends & Neighbors is a dark, sharply dressed drama about a disgraced hedge-fund manager who starts stealing from his wealthy neighbors—and finds that their private lives are more perilous than their polished façades. Jon Hamm’s dry charisma makes Andrew “Coop” Cooper an inviting guide to this world, even as the story asks how far a person can compromise himself before the satire turns sour. Both seasons have aired, and Apple has renewed the series for a third.
What is Your Friends & Neighbors about?
Andrew Cooper is a hedge-fund manager fired in disgrace and dealing with a recent divorce. He turns to robbing homes in affluent Westmont Village, where the stolen objects are only part of what he uncovers: behind the displays of success are affairs, secrets and dangers that can put him and others at risk. Apple classifies the series as a TV-MA drama.
The premise gives the show two engines. One is crime: Coop’s thefts create escalating complications. The other is social observation: the neighborhood’s luxuries and rituals reveal how wealth shapes belonging and status. Creator Jonathan Tropper described his interest as writing about “the status symbols” and “the way wealth informs community,” while also subverting the apparent permanence of that world. Associated Press, April 9, 2025.
Does the show work as a drama?
Jon Hamm makes a compromised lead watchable
Hamm’s central performance is the clearest reason to give the series a try. Coop is neither a clean-cut hero nor an uncomplicated villain; the pleasure lies in watching his composure meet increasingly poor choices. Hamm’s dry, controlled presence keeps the character engaging without making his behavior harmless. Amanda Peet, Olivia Munn, Hoon Lee, Mark Tallman, Lena Hall, Aimee Carrero, Eunice Bae, Isabel Gravitt and Donovan Colan are among the ensemble.

Wealth is the setting and the subject
The show’s most distinctive tension comes from putting crime inside a landscape of conspicuous comfort. The expensive homes and carefully maintained appearances make a glossy backdrop, but the story’s sharper question is what those markers of success conceal—and how quickly a seemingly secure life can become unstable. That focus gives the series more to work with than a simple theft-of-the-week setup.
The satire and supporting stories can be uneven
The class commentary does not land with equal force in every part of the show. Rotten Tomatoes’ season-one consensus praised its “acidly witty riff on breaking bad” and Hamm as an “endlessly watchable avatar,” while noting that the commentary can stumble. Selected reviews surfaced by Metacritic likewise include praise for Hamm and the cast’s chemistry alongside complaints that some writing feels overwritten or underdeveloped. Those excerpts illustrate a range of reactions; they are not a complete measure of critical opinion.

That unevenness is worth weighing against the show’s strengths: if the wealthy-community satire and supporting plots feel layered to you, the crime story has a richer context. If they feel repetitive, Hamm’s performance may remain the main attraction.

Who should stream it?
Choose it for Hamm’s magnetic performance, a crime plot rooted in affluent-suburb spectacle, and satire about the social power of wealth. Go in expecting a show whose central hook is stronger than every supporting thread: its critical response reflects both the appeal of Hamm’s anchoring presence and reservations about uneven writing and class commentary. The series is a promising pick for viewers who enjoy morally compromised leads and want the luxury setting to mean more than just visual excess.
