Showrunner Leslye Headland has said she would like to return and described storylines she hoped to explore, but those comments are not a renewal or confirmation that a sequel is in development.
Will The Acolyte get a season 2?
No. Lucasfilm did not renew the Disney+ series, and an August 20, 2024 report from Good Morning America said it would not return for a second season. Headland’s later comments express her own interest in continuing the story; they do not change that status.
The first season premiered on June 4, 2024, with two episodes, and its eight-episode run ended on July 16, 2024, according to the same report.
What did Leslye Headland say about returning?
In 2026 interview remarks to Empire, Headland said, “I would still want to do it! Absolutely.” She also said, “As more people discover it, I think people may want to see some form of the story come back.” Those statements describe her willingness and hope, not a Lucasfilm decision or production plan. The remarks were reported in coverage of her Empire interview.

What would The Acolyte season 2 have been about?
Headland pointed to several story threads she would have pursued in a hypothetical second season. They concern unresolved character relationships and connections to wider Star Wars lore, not events shown in a released second season.
Qimir, Vernestra Rwoh and Darth Plagueis
Among the planned avenues were Qimir—also known as the Stranger—and his relationship with Jedi Master Vernestra Rwoh, as well as his connection to Darth Plagueis. Headland’s comments suggest these would have been developed as part of a continuation; they do not establish precisely how those plotlines would have played out.

Connections to sequel-era lore
Headland also mentioned links to lore established in the Star Wars sequel era. Her interview remarks do not specify a complete storyline or confirm that those connections will be explored in another project.
Why was The Acolyte canceled?
The cited August 2024 report establishes that the series would not get a second season, but it does not provide a detailed official explanation for Lucasfilm’s decision. It is therefore more accurate to state that the show was canceled after its first season than to present a specific cause—such as ratings, cost or audience response—as confirmed.

What the first season set up
The Acolyte was a mystery-thriller set during the High Republic, focused on the dark side disrupting the Jedi Order when it was at the height of its power, according to StarWars.com. Headland framed the series around a reversal of the familiar underdog-versus-institution dynamic: “If Star Wars is about the underdog versus the institution, [in The Acolyte] the Jedi are the institution.” She also described its central question as “What went wrong?” That premise and the planned Qimir-related threads help explain what a second season might have continued, but the follow-up remains unrealized.
