Alien: Romulus actor Aileen Wu says filming Navarro’s Facehugger removal scene was messy and physically unpleasant—not that it caused clinical or lasting psychological trauma. The practical creature was covered in lubricant, and Wu said she had to spit it out and rinse her mouth between takes.
Which scene did Aileen Wu call disgusting?
Wu, who plays Navarro, was talking about the moment the Facehugger is pulled off her character’s face. The creature was a practical puppet, and lubricant used on it got into Wu’s mouth during filming. As she recalled in a 2024 interview: “That was really disgusting. Someone had a bucket for me, and would run in and have me spit out the lube and wash my mouth before we did the next take.”
The description is about the unpleasant mechanics of the shoot. It does not establish that Wu suffered a real injury or lasting psychological trauma.
How the Facehugger scene was filmed
Wu described multiple practical elements being operated by the crew: the Facehugger’s fingers, a throat element and its tail. Fishing line was used to tug the tail around her neck. She also had to coordinate her performance with inflatable bladders in the creature.

“The hardest part was matching my breathing with the creature’s bladders,” she said. Wu estimated that filming the attack and thrashing sequence took three or four days. She described the removal as a separate key shot and her favorite shot to film: a single profile view, despite the mess involved.
Wu also praised the puppeteers, saying the team from Alec Gillis had worked on the original Alien films and that working with them “was very special.”

What Wu said about the chestburster sequence
Wu gave a separate account of filming Navarro’s chestburster scene. Her body from the chest down was positioned through an opening cut into the cockpit floor, with a support arrangement she compared to a bicycle seat. A hollow prosthetic chest piece was attached at her collarbone so puppeteers could move the creature through it.
She estimated that the initial setup took about three hours and that the bursting sequence was filmed 20 to 30 times. These are Wu’s estimates from her interview, not independently verified production figures.

What the production-lubricant anecdote establishes
Wu also recounted hearing from someone on the makeup or visual-effects team that production had used so much lubricant that more had to be shipped from London after supplies in Budapest ran out. That is a secondhand anecdote as Wu told it, not a verified purchasing record.
