Bishop later explains that the missing mutants have been scattered through time. The finale shows some of their destinations, then cuts to Apocalypse finding Gambit’s Queen of Hearts card in Genosha. That last image suggests a connection to Gambit’s fate; it does not confirm that he has been revived.
How the finale stops Asteroid M
The episode concludes the three-part “Tolerance Is Extinction” story, with Bastion’s Prime Sentinels threatening both the X-Men and the wider world. On Asteroid M, Professor Xavier reaches Magneto and helps him regain control of his rage. Meanwhile on Earth, Jean breaks Bastion’s hold over the Prime Sentinels and weakens Mister Sinister.
Bastion attacks Asteroid M and tries to direct it toward Earth. U.S. missiles strike the asteroid, making its descent worse. Magneto helps slow it, but before the danger is fully resolved, Asteroid M and most of the X-Men vanish. The immediate crisis is interrupted; the disappearance becomes the larger cliffhanger.
Where did the missing X-Men go?
The episode does not portray the disappearance as a normal escape or establish that the missing mutants are dead. Six months later, Forge is still searching for them when Bishop arrives. Bishop redirects Forge’s question from where they went to when they went: the implication is that the mutants have been scattered through time.

The finale shows two destinations, not a complete accounting of everyone who disappeared:
- Ancient Egypt: Rogue, Nightcrawler, Beast, Magneto, and Xavier encounter a young En Sabah Nur, who will become Apocalypse. The scene presents him before he has fully become the familiar villain.
- The far future: Jean and Scott meet Mother Askani and a young Nathan Summers. TheWrap identifies the setting as 3960 A.D. and connects Mother Askani with Rachel Summers in the comics; that identity is comic context, not something the episode explicitly explains in dialogue. TheWrap’s finale explanation.
Other missing team members remain unaccounted for in the episode. The Egypt and future scenes establish separate threads, rather than revealing where the entire team has landed.

What happens in the mid-credits scene?
The scene returns to the devastated ruins of Genosha in the present day. Apocalypse searches the wreckage and finds a Queen of Hearts card associated with Gambit. He says, “So much pain, my children. So much death.”
The card links Apocalypse to Gambit’s apparent fate and invites viewers to consider whether Gambit could become one of Apocalypse’s Horsemen. In the comics, Apocalypse recruits Horsemen, and the Blood of Apocalypse storyline includes Gambit as a Horseman. That makes the comics a useful lens for the tease, but the scene neither confirms that the animated series will follow the same plot nor shows Gambit revived. ComicBook.com discusses the comics parallel.

“Mid-credits” is the more precise label for this scene: TVLine uses that term, although some coverage and viewers call it a post-credits scene. TVLine’s finale recap.
What the ending confirms—and what it leaves open
| Shown or stated in the finale | Suggested, but not confirmed |
|---|---|
| Asteroid M and many X-Men disappear; Bishop says the missing mutants have been scattered through time. | Their precise routes, how they will return, and the fate of every missing team member. |
| Some characters appear in ancient Egypt; Jean and Scott appear in the far future. | Which specific comic arcs the time-travel story will adapt. |
| Apocalypse finds Gambit’s card at Genosha. | That Apocalypse has revived Gambit, or that Gambit will become a Horseman of Death. |
The distinction matters: the cliffhanger gives viewers concrete destinations and a striking clue at Genosha, but it leaves the next steps unresolved.

How the comic references can help
Three comics comparisons commonly used to orient viewers are Rise of Apocalypse, Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix, and Blood of Apocalypse. They offer context for the ancient-Egypt thread, the far-future characters, and the Gambit tease, respectively. They are optional companion reading; the episode’s story can be followed without knowing those books. In particular, Blood of Apocalypse helps explain why the Queen of Hearts card may evoke a Horseman storyline, but it is not proof that the show will reproduce that plot.
Why the finale includes global glimpses
In an interview with ComicBook.com, finale director Chase Conley said, “I think a lot of [the cameos are] just to serve the purpose,” explaining that the Russia sequence and other regional appearances showed how the global electromagnetic pulse affected different places. That comment addresses the function of those cameos; it does not settle the meaning of the time-travel cliffhanger or Apocalypse’s card. Read the ComicBook.com interview with Chase Conley.
