The strongest moments combine standout vocals, real emotional weight, surprise or fan interaction, and segments that work especially well in the finished television edit. There is no clearly established “worst” performance; the fairest criticism is that the special is a celebratory film-promotion event, not a searching reassessment of Wicked.
What is Wicked: One Wonderful Night?
NBC and Universal Pictures presented the two-hour musical special as a companion event to Wicked: For Good. Filmed at Los Angeles’s Dolby Theatre, it brings together Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang and Marissa Bode for songs from the films, interviews, behind-the-scenes material and previews of two new songs: “There’s No Place Like Home” and “The Girl in the Bubble.” A 37-piece live orchestra led by Stephen Oremus performs reimagined arrangements. NBCUniversal’s announcement said the special originally aired on NBC on November 6, 2025, with Peacock streaming announced to begin the following day; that schedule does not establish current streaming availability.
The best moments, ranked
This ranking is an editorial judgment, weighing vocal performance, emotional effect, surprise or audience connection, and how well each moment lands in the broadcast edit. It focuses on what viewers can see in the telecast, while identifying when a detail comes from the live taping instead.
1. “For Good” brings two generations together
Erivo and Grande perform “For Good” at the Gershwin Theatre, where the number’s history gets a second layer: original Broadway stars Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth join them. The Los Angeles Times describes Erivo becoming tearful and Grande wiping her tears. That response gives the reunion more than a ceremonial feel; the performance becomes a visible meeting point between the musical’s original stage legacy and its film-era leads. 2. Erivo and Goldblum reshape “The Wizard and I”
Jeff Goldblum accompanies Erivo on an emerald piano as she takes “The Wizard and I” in a more intimate, jazz-inflected direction. The arrangement leaves space for her vocal runs and belting, making the song feel less like a straightforward reprise and more like a fresh interpretation. It is one of the clearest demonstrations of the special’s musical premise: familiar material can sound newly personal when the staging and arrangement change.
There is a useful distinction between the telecast and the taping. Vanity Fair reported that Erivo slipped on a lyric during an earlier take and the song was repeated; the broadcast performance was captured successfully. 3. A young fan joins Grande for “Popular”
After a fan montage, Grande invites four-year-old Remington, dressed as Elphaba, onstage for “Popular.” He joins in with lines, learns the hair toss and receives a replica wand. It is the most direct audience-participation moment: rather than simply showing fans’ affection for the characters, the special lets one of them briefly enter the performance. The exchange is warm, spontaneous in spirit and easy to understand even for viewers who came for the songs rather than the surrounding promotion.
4. “Get Happy/Happy Days Are Here Again” closes on a surprise
Erivo and Grande end the special with a medley associated with Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand, stepping outside the Wicked songbook for the closing number. Its value is partly in the contrast: after a program built around Oz, the finale offers a different musical lineage and a final shared spotlight for the two leads. Vanity Fair reported that the number was repeated for the live audience after a sound-mixing problem during the taping. That production detail should not be mistaken for something shown in the broadcast.

5. “Dancing Through Life” turns into an ensemble comedy bit
The finished special benefits from Bowen Yang’s comic presence, and “Dancing Through Life” supplies an energetic change of pace. Vanity Fair’s account of the live taping describes Yang, Ethan Slater and Marissa Bode playfully competing in sections of the song because Jonathan Bailey was not there. That account is about the room, not a claim that every part of the competition appears in the telecast. The moment earns its place for comic timing and ensemble spirit rather than vocal fireworks.
What is the worst moment?
No cited account identifies a clearly weak performance or a consensus low point in the finished special. Calling out a specific number as the “worst” would overstate what is established. The most defensible criticism is about the format: this is a polished, celebratory event connected to a film launch, so its interviews and performances promote the franchise rather than challenge or critically reassess it.

The broadcast is also a selective edit of a live taping. Repeated takes and other material reported from the venue are not necessarily part of the two-hour program. That distinction matters when judging what viewers actually saw: a retake at the taping is not, by itself, evidence that the telecast was poorly performed or edited.

NBCUniversal reported that the special reached 3.6 million viewers across platforms. The company also said that figure was 64% higher than the prior year’s Defying Gravity: The Curtain Rises on Wicked special, and that its reported 18–49 demographic was up 148%. These are NBCUniversal’s reported figures, not independently verified measurements. The company’s post-broadcast report gives the comparison.
