Spoilers for Wind River. Natalie Hanson is assaulted at the drilling camp, escapes into the freezing night, and dies after running barefoot through the snow. The film’s medical examiner identifies her cause of death as pulmonary hemorrhage from inhaling subzero air. At the climax, Cory Lambert makes the man responsible face a cold-weather ordeal that echoes Natalie’s final flight—but that revenge does not undo her death or resolve the wider issues the film raises.
How did Natalie die?
Natalie gets away from the violence at the drilling camp, but she is barefoot and exposed to the freezing night. She runs until she collapses. In the screenplay, the medical examiner identifies her cause of death as pulmonary hemorrhage caused by inhaling subzero air. The fictional examiner explains that extreme cold damages the tiny air sacs in the lungs, fluid builds up, and the victim can drown in blood. That is the film’s explanation, not an independent medical assessment.
Who assaulted Natalie, and what happened to Matt?
The investigation’s flashback reveals the events at the camp. Natalie is there with her boyfriend, Matt. When Matt’s coworkers attack him, Pete sexually assaults Natalie. Matt is killed in the same violent episode. Natalie escapes, but dies in the snow before she can reach safety. The National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center’s 2017 discussion describes the assault, death, investigation at the oil-drilling site, and jurisdictional conflict depicted in the film: NIWRC’s film review of Wind River.
Why does Lambert make Pete face the cold?
At the climax, Lambert confronts Pete outdoors and makes him endure conditions that echo Natalie’s fatal flight. The parallel turns the confrontation into personal vengeance and grim poetic justice: Pete is forced to experience the cold and fear Natalie faced. It is not a court judgment, and it does not bring Natalie back or settle the larger problems the story points toward.

What does the ending mean for Lambert and Martin?
After the shootout, Lambert visits Jane and shares a quiet moment of grief with Martin, Natalie’s father. Their loss connects Natalie’s death to Lambert’s own grief over his daughter. The ending shifts away from revenge toward the people who must live with what happened. NIWRC notes that the story is framed through Lambert and Banner while raising the broader issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women; its perspective is an advocacy organization’s, not a stand-in for every Native viewer or community.
What did Taylor Sheridan say Natalie represents?
In a 2017 Festival de Cannes interview, writer-director Taylor Sheridan said, “In the character of Natalie, I wanted someone with a real strength of spirit.” He added: “I wanted to see the fighter, and yet I wanted to also represent hope and youth and love.” Those comments describe Sheridan’s stated intention for the character; they do not make Natalie’s death less tragic or turn the film’s ending into a solution. What does the film say about missing and murdered Indigenous women?
Wind River presents Natalie’s death as one story within a wider crisis, including the complications of investigating violence on tribal land. In a 2017 NPR interview, Sheridan told Scott Simon, “It’s based on thousands of actual stories just like it.” Speaking about the film’s closing card, he said that two researchers spent three months seeking a statistic and, after contacting agencies including the Department of Justice and CDC, returned unable to find one. No prevalence statistic for missing and murdered Indigenous women is established by these cited materials. NIWRC’s 2017 discussion likewise addresses missing data and argues that the film can prompt awareness while viewers need further context and dialogue to understand the issues fully. That is NIWRC’s advocacy perspective, not a claim about how all Native audiences respond.
