Apple announced in August 2024 that Watts would write a sequel to its action comedy Wolfs. In November, Watts said a late change to the original film’s release plan—and the way the change was handled—led him to return the money advanced for sequel work.
What happened to Wolfs 2?
The sequel was announced as a project for Jon Watts to write, but Watts later said he had walked away. In an interview with Deadline, as reported by MacRumors on November 23, 2024, he said he returned the money Apple had given him for the sequel. His account does not describe an Apple cancellation; Watts put responsibility for ending his involvement on himself.
“But the truth is that Apple didn’t cancel the Wolfs sequel, I did, because I no longer trusted them as a creative partner,” Watts said, according to MacRumors’s account of the interview.
Why did Jon Watts withdraw?
Watts attributed his decision to Apple changing the planned release strategy for the first film shortly before the change was announced. He said the original plan had promised a wide theatrical release, but Apple shifted to a limited theatrical run followed by streaming, without discussing the change with him in advance. “But their last minute shift from a promised wide theatrical release to a streaming release was a total surprise and made without any explanation or discussion,” he said.

Watts also said Apple included the sequel announcement despite his request that it not be announced. He said he “quietly returned the money they gave me for the sequel.” These are Watts’s stated reasons in the interview; Apple’s public announcement does not explain its later release-plan decision or establish the terms of any agreement with him.
What Apple announced in August 2024
In its August 7, 2024 announcement, Apple Original Films said it had tapped Watts to write a sequel. The same release gave the original Wolfs a limited theatrical date of September 20, 2024, followed by global Apple TV+ streaming on September 27, 2024. Those were the release dates announced at the time.

Apple described Wolfs as an action comedy starring Brad Pitt and George Clooney. Clooney plays a professional fixer hired to cover up a high-profile crime; Pitt plays another fixer, and the two are forced to work together. Apple’s announcement also named Amy Ryan, Austin Abrams, Poorna Jagannathan, Richard Kind, and Zlatko Burić among the cast.
Matt Dentler, Apple Original Films’ head of features, described the release strategy as a way to bring “the best of both worlds” to audiences and said Apple was excited to work with Watts on the sequel. That statement records Apple’s position when it announced the plan; it does not establish a contractual guarantee of a wide theatrical release.

Is Wolfs 2 happening now?
The publicly available substantive accounts identified here are Apple’s August 2024 announcement and Watts’s November 2024 explanation for withdrawing. No newer public report confirming that the sequel has been revived was identified as of October 7, 2026. That does not rule out private discussions or unreported developments, so the careful answer is that the announced sequel assignment was withdrawn by Watts and a revival has not been publicly confirmed in these accounts.
