Director Jon M. Chu confirmed that the scrap of Fiyero’s Wizard’s Guard uniform delivered to Elphaba carries a note. The film never shows it clearly enough to read, but Chu says it explains why Elphaba knows Fiyero survived and why she goes through with the plan that lets her escape.
What does Fiyero’s note say?
The exact wording on the film’s note has not been confirmed. Chu said the scrap has a note, but the filmmakers chose not to show a close-up: “That piece of clothing has a note on it. We didn’t want to do a close-up on that because it would’ve been too much too soon.” In his Entertainment Weekly interview republished by AOL, he explained that the hidden message helps establish what Elphaba knows before the ending’s reveal.
Some accounts quote a message beginning “Dearest Elphaba” and describing Fiyero’s escape and plan. That wording is from the Wicked stage musical, not a verified transcription of the film prop. The Tab’s comparison notes that the film’s letter would need to differ. It is useful context for the adaptation, but it should not be presented as the movie’s exact note.
What Elphaba knows—and when she learns it
Chistery gives Elphaba the uniform scrap during her final meeting with Glinda. Elphaba tells Glinda that they have seen Fiyero’s face for the last time, which leaves Glinda believing he is dead. Chu’s explanation separates Elphaba’s knowledge from the audience’s eventual reunion: Elphaba knows Fiyero is alive and has been transformed, but she has not clearly seen him as the Scarecrow until he opens the trapdoor at Kiamo Ko.

The note’s function is therefore clearer than its wording. It establishes that Fiyero survived and that he and Elphaba have communicated about the escape. Chu says it helps explain why she would go down through the trapdoor. He also describes the exchange as carrying guilt for Elphaba and reassurance from Fiyero that she saved his life.
How the note explains the surprise ending
- Chistery delivers the uniform scrap. Elphaba receives it while speaking with Glinda, who is left with the impression that Fiyero is gone.
- The hidden message gives Elphaba the missing knowledge. She understands that Fiyero survived and that there is a plan, even though the film keeps the note itself unreadable.
- Elphaba appears to die in public. She surrenders and seems to melt when Dorothy throws water on her, while escaping through a trapdoor.
- Fiyero finds her at Kiamo Ko. Transformed into the Scarecrow, he opens the trapdoor. The reunion is when Elphaba sees what he has become, and the two leave together for the land beyond Oz.
- Glinda is left behind believing Elphaba is dead. The film adds a final moment in which the Grimmerie responds as Glinda stands at the palace. The meaning is deliberately uncertain: it may suggest Elphaba’s distant magic, or that Glinda herself is beginning to access magic.
How the film ending differs from the stage musical
The key distinction for anyone trying to identify the note is that the film withholds its readable wording, while the stage musical text is quoted elsewhere. The movie also keeps the audience from seeing exactly how Elphaba’s escape is arranged until the trapdoor reveal. TIME describes the film’s ending as a departure from the musical’s more bittersweet close; it leaves Glinda believing Elphaba has died and adds the unresolved Grimmerie response.
