Wicked: For Good folds the familiar events of The Wizard of Oz into Elphaba and Glinda’s story: Dorothy’s arrival kills Nessarose, sets the enchanted shoes on their way to Dorothy, and leads to the apparent deaths of Elphaba and Fiyero. But Elphaba survives. She leaves Oz with Fiyero, while Glinda stays behind to take responsibility for the country. The final image hints at a continuing connection between the friends without explaining exactly what it means.
What happens at the end of Wicked: For Good?
Madame Morrible summons the tornado that carries Dorothy’s Kansas house into Oz. The house lands on Nessarose, killing her. Dorothy takes Nessarose’s enchanted shoes and is directed toward the Emerald City—the chain of events familiar from The Wizard of Oz, now shown as part of the history Elphaba and Glinda have lived through.
Elphaba returns to grieve for her sister, and she and Glinda clash. Fiyero helps Elphaba escape the Wizard’s guards, but he is captured. Elphaba casts a spell to protect him. Rather than simply freeing him, the spell transforms him into the Scarecrow.
Dorothy’s water appears to melt Elphaba. It is a staged death: Elphaba escapes through a trapdoor and reunites with Fiyero, who is now the Scarecrow. They leave Oz together. Elphaba asks that Glinda not be told they survived, so Glinda believes both friends are gone.

Does Elphaba die?
No. The melting is a deception, and Elphaba survives. She and Fiyero escape Oz together, keeping their survival from Glinda. That choice gives Elphaba a future beyond the public story of the Wicked Witch’s death, but it also means Glinda is left to grieve without knowing the truth.
Who are the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion?
The figures Dorothy encounters are tied to Elphaba’s life before Dorothy arrives, rather than being incidental cameos:

- The Scarecrow is Fiyero. Elphaba’s spell to protect him transforms him, and he later leaves Oz with her.
- The Tin Man is Boq. Earlier, Elphaba transforms him while trying to save him from the consequences of Nessarose’s spell.
- The Cowardly Lion is the cub Elphaba and Fiyero rescued in the first film.
How does the ending connect to The Wizard of Oz?
Dorothy’s arrival brings a well-known Oz plot into the foreground, but Wicked: For Good recasts it as a turning point in the witches’ story. Morrible’s tornado kills Nessarose; Dorothy takes the enchanted shoes; and the people who become the Tin Man and Scarecrow already have histories with Elphaba. The connection is not just that the two stories share characters and events: the film shows how Elphaba’s choices helped shape the figures Dorothy will meet.
Universal’s official synopsis of Wicked: For Good describes Dorothy’s arrival as the event that forces the estranged friends to come together once more. In the ending, that convergence does not restore their friendship to what it was. Elphaba leaves with Fiyero, while Glinda remains in Oz believing her friends are dead.

What does Glinda do after Elphaba disappears?
Glinda uses her influence to expose the Wizard as Elphaba’s father, force him to leave Oz and have Morrible arrested. She stays behind to lead. Her ending is therefore different from Elphaba’s: Elphaba escapes the country and its public judgment, while Glinda accepts responsibility for trying to change it from within.
What does the final Grimmerie image mean?
The film ends with the Grimmerie’s pages fluttering, but it does not settle why. TIME describes one reading as Elphaba sending magic from beyond Oz; another possibility is that the book responds to Glinda’s choice to do good and to magic emerging in her. The image suggests a continuing connection or power, not a confirmed reunion. The final moment does not show the friends meeting again.

How does the film ending differ from the stage musical?
TIME reports that the film expands the stage musical’s second act, adds two songs and original flashback sequences, and changes the final beat. The stage ending leaves Glinda believing those closest to her are dead; the movie adds the Grimmerie image, which could signal Elphaba’s survival or Glinda’s own access to magic.

What story is Wicked: For Good adapted from?
Universal identifies the film as the final chapter of the story adapted from the stage musical, whose book is by Winnie Holzman and music and lyrics are by Stephen Schwartz. The musical, in turn, traces back to Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The film is not described as a direct adaptation of Maguire’s novel; the novel is an optional way to explore the story’s adaptation lineage, not a guide to every scene in the movie.
