The 2024 film Wicked offers families a way to talk about how visible difference, reputation and social standing can shape how people treat one another. Universal’s description of Elphaba and Glinda provides a starting point; comments from stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande add perspectives on vulnerability, friendship and belonging. These are useful conversation themes, not a guarantee that every child will take the same lesson from the film.
How does the film frame difference and first impressions?
In its official description, Universal presents Elphaba as a young woman misunderstood because of her unusual green skin, who has yet to discover her power. Glinda is described as popular and shaped by privilege and ambition, with a journey toward discovering her heart. That is the studio’s framing of the characters, not a complete account of everything the film says about them.
For a family conversation, those contrasts can open questions about who gets judged by appearance, who benefits from social status, and how knowing someone personally might change an impression. Rather than treating either character as a simple moral example, invite children to notice how their views develop as the story unfolds.
What have the performers said about acceptance and support?
Speaking in Los Angeles, Ariana Grande told The Associated Press: “I think it’s such a beautiful thing that pop music, pop culture, these films and art that we create, can … create a safe space for people who feel like they don’t belong.” This is Grande’s view of what art can offer; it is not evidence that the film will have the same effect on every viewer.

Cynthia Erivo, who portrays Elphaba, described an agreement she and Grande made before filming to care for one another and make room for each other during a major undertaking. As Erivo put it: “Before we started shooting both of us had a conversation about making sure that we would take care of each other and make the space that we needed for each other, and take, you know, give each other what we needed, be generous with each other in this thing, because we knew it was a big undertaking.”
Erivo also said that playing Elphaba required her to embrace vulnerability and let audiences see more of the human being behind the character. These interview comments can help families discuss what listening, generosity and mutual support look like in practice.

Questions to ask after watching
Let children share their own reactions first. Then choose a question or two that fits their interest; these are suggested conversation prompts, not a tested lesson plan.
- Who gets to decide that someone is “wicked,” and what do they know about that person?
- How might being judged by an outward difference feel to Elphaba?
- What changes when Glinda begins to know Elphaba as a person rather than a reputation?
- What does it look like to listen to a friend and make room for them?
Children may respond differently, or focus on parts of the story that adults did not expect. The aim can simply be to hear what they noticed and explore their questions together.

What is the film’s connection to the musical and novel?
Universal describes Wicked as a two-part film adaptation of the stage musical, which is based on Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The film is therefore adapted from the musical, not directly from the novel. Universal’s May 15, 2024 announcement listed November 27, 2024 as the first film’s theatrical release date; that date is historical context, not an indication of where the film can be watched now.
The novel is an optional companion for readers interested in the story’s source material, not a family discussion guide. A novel and a screen musical are different experiences, and the film’s themes alone do not establish the book’s tone or suitability for a particular reader.
