Sunday estimates put its global debut at $164.2 million; NBCUniversal’s November 25 recap gave a later estimate of $163 million. Both reports described a record opening for a Broadway musical adaptation, but neither figure makes it the biggest opening of 2024.
How much did Wicked make on opening weekend?
The answer depends on the report and when it was published. The Associated Press and the Los Angeles Times, reporting Sunday studio estimates on November 24, put Wicked at $164.2 million worldwide and $114 million in North America. NBCUniversal’s studio recap, dated November 25, reported $163 million worldwide and $112.5 million in North America. These are distinct estimates from different reporting moments; the cited reports do not reconcile the difference.
| Report | Worldwide opening | North American opening | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Associated Press, November 24, 2024 | $164.2 million | $114 million | Sunday studio estimates |
| Los Angeles Times, November 24, 2024 | $164.2 million | $114 million | Opening-weekend studio estimate |
| NBCUniversal, November 25, 2024 | $163 million | $112.5 million | Studio recap |
North America is not the same geographic measure as worldwide: the global total includes domestic and international ticket sales. NBCUniversal said the film earned $50 million across 61 international markets, including $17.2 million in the UK and Ireland and $6.7 million in Australia. Those market figures are studio-reported estimates.
What did No. 1 worldwide mean?
Wicked led the global box office for that particular weekend, November 22–24, 2024. NBCUniversal called it the top film globally, and AP reported the worldwide opening. The ranking is a weekend result, not a claim that Wicked surpassed every film’s all-time gross or every historic opening.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The distinction matters when reading the record coverage. AP placed the opening third among 2024 opening weekends, behind Deadpool & Wolverine and Inside Out 2. NBCUniversal’s November 25 recap described it as the sixth-biggest opening weekend of 2024. These annual rankings use different reported descriptions and comparison bases; the available reports do not supply a reconciliation. Neither changes the weekend’s worldwide No. 1 position.
Which record did the film set?
The record was for a Broadway musical adaptation. AP described Wicked’s launch as a record in that category. In its November 25 recap, NBCUniversal called the $163 million worldwide opening the biggest opening weekend for a Broadway adaptation and compared it with Les Misérables, which it listed at $103 million. This is a category-specific record claim, not a claim that Wicked had the biggest opening of 2024.

The film adapts the first act of the Broadway musical. Its opening offered a notable result for a stage-to-screen musical, but the record label should remain tied to that specific category rather than being broadened to all movie openings.
Why did Wicked and Gladiator II open together?
The two films arrived on the same weekend, a pairing that drew attention to the release strategy and audience awareness around both titles. Universal domestic distribution chief Jim Orr told AP: “We saw an opportunity to dominate a weekend and get a very large running start into the Thanksgiving holiday.” That is the studio’s explanation of its strategy, not proof that the release timing alone produced the box-office result.

Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian told AP: “Raising awareness can indeed lead to an increase in box office. Let’s put it this way: They didn’t hurt each other at all.” The comment is an analyst’s assessment of the simultaneous openings; the weekend totals themselves do not establish a single cause for either film’s performance.

The strongest supported conclusion is specific: a film adaptation of a major Broadway musical opened at No. 1 worldwide and set a reported opening-weekend record for Broadway adaptations. The Los Angeles Times quoted Dergarabedian calling the result “a huge result for the genre” that “sets the bar really high.” That reaction speaks to the significance of the debut, while the box-office figures remain estimates attributed to their respective reports.
