Some viewers discussed the new announcer’s voice, but the available evidence does not show that backlash was widespread or representative.
What changed on Wheel of Fortune?
On September 1, 2026, Sony Pictures Television said it had recently become aware of allegations concerning Jim Thornton. The company said he had been suspended from Wheel of Fortune and that it was recasting the announcer role while conducting an investigation, according to TVLine.
Three days later, the Los Angeles Times reported Sony’s confirmation that Thornton’s employment with the show had been terminated effective immediately. Thornton had been the program’s announcer since 2011, the Times reported. Sony’s announcement described a personnel decision; it did not identify a permanent successor.
What is known about the allegations?
The Washington Post reported that American Airlines said Flight 1276 was met by law enforcement when it arrived at Los Angeles International Airport on May 14, 2026, after a customer raised concerns during the flight. The airline did not identify Thornton as a passenger, the Post noted. The sources cited here do not establish that Thornton was arrested or charged.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Thornton’s attorney, Allison Hart, offered a separate account to the Los Angeles Times: she said he had visited crisis chat rooms to support people experiencing suicidal ideation, received a link to an unrelated chat room, and left after realizing what it was. Hart also told the Times that Thornton “did not engage in any illegal conduct, was not arrested and has not been charged with any crime.” This is his attorney’s explanation and denial, not an independently verified account.
Does the response amount to widespread backlash?
Coverage by TV Insider and other search results showed examples of viewers discussing the replacement announcer’s voice and speculating about who might take the role. That establishes that some discussion took place, but not how many viewers shared those views.

No survey, audience-wide measure, or named statistic in the reviewed coverage establishes that the response was widespread or representative. Social-media and forum posts are self-selected conversations, not a reliable measure of what the show’s audience as a whole thinks. “Backlash” is therefore best understood as a description used in coverage, not a measured verdict from viewers broadly.
Who hosts the show, and who replaced Thornton?
The change described in the September 2026 reports concerns the announcer position. The ABC listing for Celebrity Wheel of Fortune names Ryan Seacrest and Vanna White as hosts; it does not indicate that either host was replaced. The listing is for the celebrity edition, so it should not be treated as a separate confirmation about every detail of the syndicated main show.
