Operation: Italy was a fake-idol ruse designed to make the majority split its votes—and Genevieve Mushaluk says Sam Phalen had been thinking about that approach for days before the plan came together. The move brought Sam, Mushaluk and Andy Rueda together at a reward sanctuary and ended with Caroline Vidmar voted out.
What was Operation: Italy?
“Operation: Italy” is the title of Survivor 47, Episode 12. In her retrospective account, Mushaluk described the strategic move as a plan to present a fabricated immunity idol as real, prompting the majority to divide its votes and giving the three players a chance to regain leverage.
Paramount+’s official episode listing describes the installment as featuring a major reward with surprise letters from home, followed by a balance-and-dexterity immunity challenge intended to secure a place in the final six. How did the fake-idol plan take shape?
Sam had been considering the idea
In an interview excerpt attributed to Entertainment Weekly, Mushaluk recalled that Sam had been weighing the fake-idol concept for several days. The aim, as she described it, was to fracture the majority by making its members split their votes:

“A few days before Operation: Italy, Sam was starting to think, ‘Okay, we need a fake idol. Our best bet at pulling something together is we fracture the majority group and get them to split votes,’”
Her account distinguishes between developing the concept and pitching the coordinated move: Sam was considering a fake idol, while Mushaluk said Andy proposed the plan once the three were together at the sanctuary.

The reward created a chance to bring Andy in
After the Sol Yi vote, Mushaluk said she was exposed and needed help. Sam’s reward win brought Andy and Genevieve to the sanctuary with him, creating time and space for the three to discuss the move. Mushaluk recalled that she had initially thought Teeny might be the likeliest person to flip, while Sam saw Andy as the better prospect. She was nervous about working with Andy, but trusted Sam’s judgment:
“I was really nervous about working with Andy, but had built up so much goodwill with Sam that if he wanted Andy, fine, we’ll do Andy.”

Why did the plan work against Caroline?
The trio’s tactic depended on persuading the majority that Genevieve had an immunity idol, so the other players would divide their votes rather than concentrate them on the trio. Mushaluk’s interview account says the plan resulted in Caroline Vidmar’s elimination. That outcome is the reported result of the move; the available episode synopsis does not independently detail the strategic conversations or explain each player’s vote.

After her own elimination, Mushaluk told Parade she had not expected Sam to reveal at the Final Five that her idol was fake. She said she told Teeny the truth during an emotionally charged conversation because she cared about Teeny, not because she had planned for Sam to disclose the deception. Her account describes the reveal as leaving the others uncertain about whether the idol was genuine before the majority voted her out; it reflects Mushaluk’s explanation of that exchange and its personal stakes.
