Who is Rook?
Rook is Obadiah Stane. He hired the Winter Soldier to kill Howard and Maria Stark so he could take control of Stark Industries. The reveal links Bucky’s mission to Stane’s own plan: the assassination was not simply an order from HYDRA, but part of a bid for power within the Stark empire.

Bill Foster later recruits Alexei to fight alongside the Avengers in the Battle of New York. That gives Alexei a defined next step in this timeline. Bucky’s immediate resistance is clear, but the episode does not establish in detail how his future unfolds or whether he is permanently free of HYDRA’s control. Awards Radar’s episode recap
What changes from the familiar MCU timeline?
- The Stark mission: Alexei interrupts Bucky before the assassination unfolds as it does in the familiar account, and the failed serum operation sends both men on the run.
- Bucky’s agency: The trigger words still threaten to control him, but his recovered Coney Island memory helps him resist long enough to choose not to abandon Alexei.
The episode’s central shift is not just that Alexei is present at the mission. His interference alters the fate of the operation, while Bucky’s memory creates an opening for resistance. The larger implications for Bucky’s life after these events remain unresolved in the episode.
