USA for Africa recorded “We Are the World” in Los Angeles on January 28, 1985, after the American Music Awards. Quincy Jones convened the singers at around 10 p.m.; the session ran through the night. There is no reliable minute-by-minute log, so the chronology below separates reported times from events recalled in sequence rather than assigning them invented timestamps.
Before the session: an idea becomes a song
Harry Belafonte approached organizer Ken Kragen about a benefit project. Kragen concluded that making a record could be more practical than staging a concert, then brought producer Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie into the effort. Richie asked Michael Jackson to help write the song. Stevie Wonder was initially considered as a co-writer, but Jackson and Richie composed it. Jones later told the Los Angeles Times that they wrote it in two or three days, beginning with the melody and then adding lyrics, with some polishing near the end.
The Los Angeles Times reported that the instrumental tracks were recorded on January 22. The vocal session six days later was not a rehearsal: artists had received demo cassettes and lyric sheets in advance as homework.
Why the singers gathered after the American Music Awards
January 28 was chosen because many of the desired performers would already be in Los Angeles for the American Music Awards. Richie hosted the awards that evening, and the recording followed. HISTORY reports that Jones convened the session at around 10 p.m.; the Associated Press later described it as an all-night session. The date and approximate start are useful anchors, not a complete studio timetable.

How Quincy Jones organized the room
The roster grew beyond Kragen’s original target. In its February 13, 1985 account, the Los Angeles Times reported that 46 artists took part and that nearly 50 others had been turned away. Jones and Kragen planned the solo assignments and where each singer would stand before the artists arrived. Names were taped to the floor so people could go straight to their places.
Jones also set the tone at the door. The Associated Press, recounting the documentary, reports that he put up a sign reading “Check Your Ego at the Door.” The instruction suited a session in which celebrated soloists had to work as one ensemble.

What happened in the studio that night
Retrospective accounts based on the documentary describe the room as nervous at first. The singers gathered around Stevie Wonder at a piano for a run-through. Jones then asked them to groove without pounding their feet on the risers, because the noise was getting into the recording. The Associated Press notes that the documentary draws on footage from four cameras and audio recorded by journalist David Breskin; these scenes are retrospective documentary material, not a full session transcript.
The Swahili suggestion
Wonder suggested adding a phrase in Swahili. The Associated Press reports that the idea was dropped after the group learned Swahili was not spoken in Ethiopia. Netflix Tudum recounts Waylon Jennings objecting and leaving, drawing on the documentary and a crew member’s memory. That account is best understood as an attributed recollection, not a verbatim, independently recorded exchange.

The line held for Prince
Prince did not attend. A brief solo had been reserved for him; according to the Associated Press and Netflix Tudum, Kenny Loggins suggested that Huey Lewis take the line instead. Lewis filled the place held for Prince in the recording.
Cyndi Lauper’s jewelry
The Associated Press’s account of the documentary says Lauper’s jangling jewelry interfered with the recording and prolonged the session. It is a memorable production anecdote, but the available account does not establish a precise amount of delay or when it occurred.

How late did the session last?
The accounts characterize the session as lasting all night. Netflix Tudum quotes Richie’s recollection: “By 7 o’clock in the morning, we became a family.” That marks the feeling he remembered by 7 a.m.; it does not establish the time of the final take, the session’s official end, or when each singer left. No cited account supplies a minute-stamped log of every entrance, take, or departure.

A January 31, 1985 Los Angeles Times report described plans to release a single in March, followed by a double album. It said proceeds would go through USA for Africa for famine relief and related programs. These were the announced plans at the time, rather than a complete account of later distribution or impact.

Apple Music’s listing for We Are the World: The Story Behind the Song says the single raised over $60 million for African famine relief. The listing gives no accounting date or methodology, so that figure should be treated as Apple Music’s catalog summary, not as an independently audited current total: Apple Music listing.
Which details have firm times—and which do not?
| Time marker | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| January 22, 1985 | The Los Angeles Times reported that the instrumental tracks were recorded on this date. |
| January 28, 1985 | The vocal gathering took place in Los Angeles after the American Music Awards. |
| Around 10 p.m. | HISTORY’s approximate time for Jones convening the session. |
| All night | The Associated Press’s description of the session’s duration; it is not an exact end time. |
| By 7 a.m. | Richie’s retrospective recollection of the group’s sense of family, quoted by Netflix Tudum; not proof of a final take or wrap time. |
The most responsible “minute-by-minute” account is therefore a sequence with a few time anchors. The available contemporary reporting and later documentary accounts illuminate how the night was planned and remembered, but do not support a clock time for every event.
