Kenzie Petty said she never expected Maria Gonzalez to vote for her at the Survivor 46 finale. Maria later explained that Kenzie’s fire-making performance and her answer about using the prize to start a family moved her to choose Kenzie. The jury vote was 5-3-0.
How the Survivor 46 jury vote ended
Kenzie, Charlie Davis and Ben Katzman faced the jury at Final Tribal Council. Kenzie won with five votes, Charlie received three, and Ben received none, according to TVLine’s post-finale interview with Kenzie.
Earlier at the Final Four, Kenzie and Liz Wilcox worked together to beat Maria in the immunity challenge. Kenzie then won the fire-making challenge and advanced to the final three.
Why Kenzie was surprised by Maria’s vote
Kenzie said she had ruled Maria out when she considered how the jury might vote: “I literally said, ‘There’s no way I am getting Maria, so that’s out.’” She described herself as “very shocked” when she learned Maria had voted for her. In a TVLine interview published May 23, 2024, Kenzie also said she had tried to build connections with people after the merge.

Maria’s reasons for choosing Kenzie
Kenzie’s fight in the fire-making challenge
Maria said watching Kenzie struggle and then prevail at fire-making reminded her of times she had doubted herself but kept fighting. In a Parade interview published May 23, 2024, Maria said: “I think what it ultimately came down to was watching Kenzie make fire just lit a fire in me. I saw it in her eyes. I saw the fight.”
The answer about starting a family
At Final Tribal Council, Kenzie spoke about using the prize to do something for herself and start a family. Maria said that answer resonated with her because she had put aside her own dreams while caring for her family. This is Maria’s retrospective explanation of her vote, rather than an independently established account of what every juror considered.

Maria also made clear that she saw her choice as a vote for Kenzie, not merely a vote against Charlie, her close ally during the game. “This is not a story about why I didn’t vote for Charlie. This is a story about why I voted for Kenzie, why I chose Kenzie,” she told TVLine in an interview published May 23, 2024. Maria’s vote was one of Kenzie’s five, not the sole deciding vote.

The outcome and Kenzie’s surprise are clear: Maria voted for Kenzie, and Kenzie had not counted on receiving that vote. Maria’s interviews offer her own explanation—Kenzie’s fire-making comeback and the personal connection she felt to Kenzie’s family plans. The available accounts do not establish speculation about bitterness, game strategy, or producer influence as reasons for Maria’s decision.
