Host and executive producer Jeff Probst later said Randen had fully recovered.
What happened to Randen on Survivor 46?
On Day 7, Randen woke unable to use one of his hands and with pain and swelling around his neck. He described symptoms that persisted around the challenge and said he understood he might not be allowed to continue. The episode, “Wackadoodles Win,” aired March 13, 2024, according to CBS.
The symptoms prompted medical evaluation and concern about possible nerve damage or a more serious neck injury. The available accounts do not establish a specific diagnosis such as a confirmed bulging disc.
Why was Randen medically evacuated?
Probst said the on-site physician initially allowed Randen to remain in the game while monitoring him. The doctor then consulted other physicians specializing in nerve damage. After those consultations, the team concluded that a more serious problem was possible and recommended removing him for further evaluation.

There was no MRI available at the filming location, Probst said. Because imaging and possible intervention might be needed, production chose caution rather than leave Randen in the game with an unresolved risk. Probst put the decision this way: “Situations like this are really unfortunate because even though it may only be a slight risk, the health of the player is always our number one concern.” The explanation appeared in Yahoo Entertainment’s account of Probst’s interview with Entertainment Weekly.
What happened after he left the game?
Randen said he was taken for an emergency MRI and evaluated by neurologists. He said a helicopter transfer and surgery had been discussed as possibilities, but neither proved necessary. In his account, swelling near a disc was not pressing on it enough to require surgery. He said he received anti-inflammatories, therapy for his arm, and monitoring.

Randen said his hand and arm took weeks to regain useful feeling and grip. He could move and wave before he could grip a can, and he said the swelling in his neck began to subside after about a couple of weeks. As he put it, “It took me weeks to originally get my arm to start getting a lot of good feeling.”

Probst later said follow-up testing showed the injury was not more serious and that Randen had fully recovered. Access Hollywood’s health-update page, published March 14, 2024, covered the update; the same day, Parade published Randen’s account.

How the decision and recovery are described
