Unknown Number: The High School Catfish is a 2025 Netflix documentary about a real cyberbullying case in Beal City, Michigan, in which anonymous texts targeted teenagers Lauryn Licari and Owen. The investigation traced the messages to Lauryn’s mother, Kendra Licari. Tom’s Guide reported on September 5, 2025, that the film had reached No. 1 in Netflix’s movie ranking; that is a dated ranking, not a statement of its current position.
What is Unknown Number: The High School Catfish about?
Directed by Skye Borgman, the 1-hour-35-minute documentary follows the harassment of Lauryn and her then-boyfriend Owen, who were 13 when suspicious messages began arriving from an unknown number. Netflix describes the film as a documentary in its true-crime and documentary categories. It is a feature, not a series. Netflix’s title listing provides the release and classification details; Netflix Tudum’s release article describes the case and credits.
What happened in the case?
Messages started, stopped, then returned
Netflix Tudum reports that Lauryn and Owen began receiving suspicious texts in October 2020. After a pause, the messages resumed in September 2021 and continued over the next 15 months as a daily barrage of threats and insults. Some included personal information that suggested the sender was close to Lauryn. TIME reported that Owen received as many as 30–50 messages a day; that is a reported upper range, not a total count for the case. TIME’s account covers the volume estimate.
The investigation identified the sender
Investigators initially focused on classmates and friends. According to Tudum, Bay City officer Bradley Peter, who served as an FBI liaison, eventually traced the masked messages to Kendra Licari. Sheriff Mike Main confronted her during a home search; body-camera footage of that confrontation appears in the documentary.

Arrest, plea and sentence
Tudum reports that Licari was arrested in December 2022 and pleaded guilty to two counts of stalking a minor. It says she received a sentence of 19 months to five years and was released on August 8, 2024. These legal details are reported by Tudum, which attributes the plea and sentence to local reporting; they are not a substitute for court records.
Why did it reach No. 1 on Netflix?
Tom’s Guide reported on September 5, 2025, that the documentary had entered Netflix’s Top 10 on its August 29 premiere date and had recently risen to No. 1. The ranking describes its position at the time of that report; it does not establish where the film ranks now. Tom’s Guide’s September 5 report is the source for that historical claim.

The case combines anonymous harassment, a long investigation and a sender whose connection to one of the targets was deeply personal. Axios Detroit quoted former Isabella County Prosecutor David Barberi, who tried the case and took part in the documentary, saying he was not surprised by its attention but that “nobody was prepared for the response it’s gotten.” Documentary filmmaker and University of Detroit Mercy associate professor Jason Roche told Axios that documentary success reflects demand for true stories and creative ways of telling them. Those are the interviewees’ interpretations, not audience measurements. Axios Detroit’s report includes both comments and notes the film’s dramatic reenactments.
Does the documentary establish a motive?
It identifies who sent the messages, but the motive is less settled. Director Skye Borgman told Tudum, “I don’t know that she really knows why she did it.” Borgman described the explanation in the film as complex and rooted in personal trauma. That is the director’s characterization, not a definitive finding about Licari’s motive.

Is the film based on a true story?
Yes. It documents the real case involving Lauryn, Owen and Kendra Licari. The distinction to keep in mind is that case details reported by Netflix and other outlets are not the same as every editorial choice in a documentary: the film presents interviews and, as Axios reports, dramatic reenactments alongside material such as police body-camera footage.
Content rating and viewing note
Netflix rates the documentary TV-MA. Its content guidance flags cyberbullying, emotional and verbal child abuse, and mentions of self-harm. Viewers who may find those subjects difficult should take that warning into account.
