Matthias Schoenaerts did receive a six-month prison term in a December 2025 ruling—but that was a default judgment, issued while he was absent, and it was later overturned after he appealed. As of October 7, 2026, reports described further proceedings and prosecutors’ requests for penalties, with a verdict expected in November. Those requests were not a new sentence, and the later verdict had not yet been reported.
What the six-month sentence referred to
In December 2025, the police court in Beringen, Limburg, Belgium, imposed a six-month prison term on Schoenaerts in absentia. The court also imposed a €4,000 fine and a one-year driving ban. The case concerned two occasions in April 2024 when he rode a motorcycle in Pelt without a valid licence, after an earlier driving ban required him to pass examinations before recovering his licence. TV Limburg and Belga reporting covered the ruling and appeal.
Because the ruling was issued in his absence, it was a default judgment. It was not the final outcome after the appeal.
How the case changed after the appeal
Schoenaerts appealed. Belga reported on January 5, 2026, that the default judgment had been overturned and the case reopened. The court gave him until September 14 to complete the theoretical and practical driving examinations required in connection with the earlier ban. Later September reporting said he had passed both examinations.

At the January hearing, Belga reported him saying: “I was not correct to the police authorities, but I am now here to take responsibility.” That is the news agency’s English rendering of his statement, not a court transcript. Belga’s report covered the appeal and hearing.
What prosecutors requested in September 2026
At proceedings reported on September 14–15, prosecutors sought penalties over additional alleged traffic offenses from October and November 2025. Reports described allegations including driving a pickup without a licence, refusing breath or saliva tests, and an altercation or resistance involving local police. These were allegations in the later proceedings, not findings established by the earlier six-month ruling.

Le Soir, carrying Belga reporting, said the prosecution sought up to 18 months’ imprisonment and €15,200 in fines across more than one matter. Those figures describe the prosecution’s requested penalties, not a punishment imposed by a judge. The same reporting said Schoenaerts had passed the required driving tests and was willing to accept a 20-hour road-safety course offered as an option; it was not reported as a court order. Reporting available as of October 7, 2026, does not establish whether he will serve a prison term. The six-month default judgment had been overturned, and the later prosecution requests were still awaiting a court decision. September coverage said a verdict was expected in November 2026, a date still in the future at the time of this article. No later outcome can be inferred from the requested penalties.
