Spoilers for Season 5, including the finale. The Abyss is the hostile alternate dimension inhabited by the Mind Flayer, Demogorgons, vines and Vecna’s other creatures. It is not the Upside Down: the Upside Down is the unstable bridge connecting Hawkins to the Abyss. In Season 5, Vecna aims to merge the Abyss with Earth.
How the Abyss differs from the Upside Down
The distinction is central to the show’s explanation of how its worlds connect: the Abyss is the destination, while the Upside Down is the route between that world and Hawkins. Netflix’s Season 5 explainer describes the Upside Down as a bridge between two points in time and space, with the Abyss at the far end.
| Feature | The Abyss | The Upside Down |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A hostile alternate dimension | An unstable wormhole or bridge connecting Hawkins to the Abyss |
| Its role in the story | Henry Creel’s place of exile and the realm Vecna wants to merge with Earth | The passage Henry and the creatures use to reach Hawkins |
| What is there | The Mind Flayer, vines, Demogorgons and other creatures | A shadowy, unstable corridor with a replica-like connection to Hawkins |
How the Abyss and the Upside Down were connected
Netflix’s account of the show’s mythology traces the connection to the Rainbow Room events in Season 4. Eleven banished Henry Creel to the Abyss. He would have remained lost there if Dr. Brenner had not compelled Eleven to search for him. When she made remote contact with the Abyss, the Upside Down formed. Henry and the creatures could then use it as a path back to Hawkins.
What the Abyss looks like—and what is inside it
The Abyss is shown as a stark, hostile landscape beneath a stormy yellow sky, with steep canyons and jagged rock formations. Vecna holds the children he has kidnapped within a structure called the Pain Tree. In the finale, that apparent tree is revealed to be the Mind Flayer itself.

Why Vecna wants to merge the Abyss with Earth
Vecna’s endgame is to bring the Abyss and Earth together. The heroes’ plan hinges on reaching the Abyss and destroying the bridge so that he cannot complete the merger. This makes the distinction between the two realms more than a naming detail: the Abyss is the world Vecna wants to bring into contact with Earth, and the Upside Down is the connection the characters seek to destroy.
What “exotic matter” means in the show
In the Episode 7 explanation, Dustin learns that a sphere of exotic matter sustains the unstable Upside Down. That is a fictional mechanism in the series’ cosmology, not an established scientific explanation of real wormholes. The story uses the idea to explain what holds its bridge between worlds together; it should not be taken as a claim about how actual wormholes work.

Why Season 5 explains the distinction
Co-creator Ross Duffer told Netflix that the final season was intended to explain what the Upside Down was after the show had gradually revealed its layers. The answer reframes earlier events: the Upside Down is not simply the creatures’ home, but a bridge to their home in the Abyss.
