It gets the story moving toward its last confrontation, but its central achievement is the promise of an ending still to come: the scale is larger, while the emotional question is whether this ensemble can still feel like a family under pressure.
What Volume 1 is—and where it begins
Netflix calls Season 5 the show’s final season and is releasing it in three parts; Volume 1 contains four episodes. The story is set in fall 1987, with the heroes starting from the chaotic position left by their defeat at the end of Season 4. That setup gives the opening volume a clear job: reassemble the characters and point them toward the final battle, rather than resolve the whole series.
That distinction matters when judging the ending. This batch can deliver a substantial turn or a satisfying burst of momentum, but it cannot provide the closure promised by the final season as a whole.
Does the opening find momentum?
GamesRadar’s spoiler-free review describes the opening as getting moving quickly and singles out the scale of episode four’s set piece. Those are that reviewer’s judgments, not evidence of a broader critical consensus. They suggest the volume’s most immediate strength: it does not spend all four episodes merely resetting the board after Season 4.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The trade-off is familiar for a final-season launch. The story has to establish where the characters stand, arrange its threats, and make the eventual end feel earned. Exposition and setup are therefore part of the assignment, but they can also make a four-episode installment feel like a bridge rather than a complete dramatic unit. The question is not simply whether the volume is big; it is whether its action moves the characters and the story forward rather than distracting from what remains unresolved.
Can scale and spectacle keep the characters at the center?
Co-creator Ross Duffer described the season this way: “This is the biggest season we’ve ever had in terms of action, visual effects, and story,” adding, “but ultimately what people want is to see these characters together one last time.” That is the creator’s stated ambition, not a neutral quality measure—and it identifies the standard the volume has to meet. Spectacle matters most when it intensifies the relationships and choices that made the series more than a succession of supernatural threats.

Time’s analysis of the ending reads Volume 1 as arranging the pieces for the final battle while bringing focus back to Will, Eleven, and the show’s origins. That interpretation points toward a useful balance: the wider conflict needs to feel consequential, but returning to the people and history at its core is what can give the eventual confrontation emotional weight.
Does Volume 1 end on a cliffhanger?
The ending is best understood as a handoff to the remaining parts of the final season, not a stopping point that completes the story. Time characterizes it as preparation for the final battle. Without revealing the closing-scene mechanics, the volume’s payoff is escalation and forward movement; its reserve of unanswered story is intentional. That can make the ending effective as a launch into the finale while still leaving viewers waiting for the actual resolution.

Is it worth watching?
For viewers ready to return to the final season’s conflict, Volume 1 offers a brisk opening, a reviewer-praised large-scale episode-four sequence, and a renewed emphasis on the characters and origins that frame the endgame. Its limitation is also its format: four episodes can build momentum, but they are not meant to settle the series’ biggest questions. The more useful question than “can the Duffer brothers stick the landing?” is whether this opening gives the landing something meaningful to complete. On the evidence of its setup and emphasis, it gives the finale a direction; the final season still has to deliver the closure.
