What happens in Stranger Things Season 4?
Season 4 takes place in spring 1986, six months after the Battle of Starcourt. The Byers family and Eleven have moved to California, the Hawkins group is trying to navigate high school and grief, and Hopper is imprisoned in Russia. Eleven has lost access to her powers just as a new threat begins targeting teenagers burdened by intense shame and trauma.
The Hawkins teens call the killer Vecna, after a Dungeons & Dragons spellcaster. His victims—including Chrissy, Fred, and Patrick—are haunted by visions and the image of a clock before they die. Max realizes she is next. Her friends use Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill,” her favorite song, to help her reconnect with memories of them and escape Vecna’s mental trap. Netflix’s Season 4 recap explains how music gives Max a way out.
Who is Vecna?
Eleven’s recovered memories reveal that Vecna is Henry Creel, a child with psychic abilities who became a test subject at Hawkins Lab. He is tied directly to Eleven’s past, and the season’s killings are part of his effort to open gates between the real world and the Upside Down. Netflix’s official recap follows the connection from Henry to Vecna.

While Eleven works to recover her powers, the California group improvises a sensory deprivation tank so she can use them remotely. In Hawkins, the teens plan a physical attack on Vecna in the Upside Down, with Max acting as bait. Joyce, Murray, and Hopper’s struggle in Russia also intersects with the threat through the Upside Down’s hive mind.
What happens at the end of Season 4?
The group’s plan injures Vecna, but does not establish that he is dead. As the attack unfolds, Eddie draws the demobats away from Dustin and is killed. The town’s public account continues to blame Eddie for the murders; Dustin tells Eddie’s uncle, Wayne Munson, that Eddie died a hero protecting Hawkins. Netflix’s recap recounts Eddie’s final stand.

Is Max dead?
No. Max escapes Vecna’s trance, but her heart stops. Eleven brings her back, and Max is left in a coma. Eleven cannot find her in the psychic void, and doctors cannot say when—or whether—she will wake. At the end of Season 4, Max is alive but her condition remains unresolved. Netflix’s finale recap describes what happens to her.
What happens to Hawkins?
Vecna’s attack opens the fourth gate, and fractures spread through Hawkins. The town attributes the devastation to an earthquake, but the final scenes show red lightning, rotting vegetation, and particles from the Upside Down drifting over the town. The boundary between the two worlds is breaking down, while Vecna remains an unresolved threat. Netflix’s recap calls the shadow dimension’s arrival in Hawkins a sign that a final battle is near: Season 4 finale recap.
