Netflix reported substantial viewing for Season 5 and the franchise in the second half of 2025; those figures measure viewing, not approval or subscriber retention.
What is known about the finale’s reception?
TheWrap reported viewers who found the ending predictable alongside others who felt it provided closure. That supports describing the response as divided, not claiming that most viewers rejected the finale. Individual posts and reaction stories show that people debated the ending; they do not establish how the entire audience felt.
The official Netflix Tudum interview also leaves room for interpretation. The Duffer Brothers said of young Henry: “We wanted to leave it up to the audience in terms of whether young Henry did choose this or whether it was simply the Mind Flayer controlling him from beginning to end.” The interview presents that ambiguity as an intentional question for viewers, rather than a definitive explanation that settles every interpretation.
Do viewing figures show that audiences abandoned the series?
No. Netflix’s report for the second half of 2025 recorded 94 million Season 5 views and 275 million views across all five seasons. Netflix defines a view as total hours viewed divided by runtime. These are engagement totals, not counts of unique people, subscription cancellations, or satisfaction with the finale.

Netflix separately said Season 5 Volume 1 recorded 59.6 million views in its premiere week and reached number one in 90 countries. Those launch figures show a strong debut by Netflix’s account, but they do not reveal how viewers responded to the finale months later. The premiere-week figure and the second-half-of-2025 totals cover different measurement windows, so they should not be treated as equivalent measures or as evidence of retention.
What can’t be concluded from the available evidence?
- There is no representative evidence here showing that Netflix subscribers canceled because of the finale.
- There is no reliable post-finale viewing or continuation dataset here establishing that audiences broadly stopped watching.
- Viewing totals cannot establish whether viewers liked the ending, and online discussion cannot stand in for a representative audience survey.
A fan-post question such as “Did S5 had less hype than S4?” captures one viewer’s phrasing, not a survey result. The sources available do not provide comparable reception scores or representative survey data that would support ranking approval of Season 5 against earlier seasons.
