When does Star Wars: Starfighter come out?
Lucasfilm’s current film page lists May 28, 2027 as the theatrical release date. The studio’s schedule can change. Director Shawn Levy said the release weekend coincides with the 50th anniversary of the original Star Wars film’s theatrical opening. Lucasfilm’s film page has the current date; its August 2026 report records Levy’s anniversary comment.
What is the film about?
Lucasfilm describes Starfighter as an all-new standalone adventure with an original story in a period of Star Wars history not previously explored on screen. Its official synopsis identifies Gosling’s Kade Auberon as a cynical rogue whose mysterious past draws him into a dangerous adventure across the galaxy.
At D23 in August 2026, Gosling described Kade as “a guy from the wrong side of the galaxy, whose fate is intertwined with the fastest starfighter ever built.” The studio has not disclosed the full plot or explained what makes that starfighter the fastest. Levy has said the story carries themes of hope, family and adventure, but those promotional remarks do not reveal further story details. Lucasfilm’s D23 report includes the comments and the official character description.

Is Star Wars: Starfighter a sequel?
It is not being presented as a direct sequel or a prequel. Lucasfilm places the story approximately five years after The Rise of Skywalker, while the Associated Press reported Levy’s description of the movie as neither a prequel nor a sequel, but a standalone adventure featuring new characters several years after Episode IX. That places the film later in the timeline than the sequel trilogy without establishing a direct continuation of its story. “Standalone” describes the film’s announced position; it does not establish whether the characters could appear in future stories.

Who is in the cast?
Lucasfilm announced these eight cast members:
- Ryan Gosling as Kade Auberon
- Flynn Gray
- Matt Smith
- Mia Goth
- Aaron Pierre
- Jamael Westman
- Daniel Ings
- Amy Adams
The studio’s published materials identify Gosling’s character, but do not give character names for the other announced cast members. Lucasfilm’s cast announcement lists the ensemble.

Shawn Levy directs and produces alongside Kathleen Kennedy; Jonathan Tropper wrote the screenplay. Ryan Gosling, Mary McLaglen, Josh McLaglen, Dave Filoni and Dan Levine are executive producers. Lucasfilm said production began in the U.K. in its announcement dated August 28, 2025; that is a dated production update, not confirmation that filming is still underway.
