The brief tribute referred to their characters in Star Wars: Hamill played Luke Skywalker, son of Jones’s Darth Vader. Jones’s career, however, reached far beyond that iconic voice, spanning acclaimed stage work, film and television.
What did Mark Hamill say about James Earl Jones?
Hamill’s post read “#RIP dad 💔.” ABC News quoted the message in its September 9, 2024 report, and Variety also reproduced the post and dated it September 9.
Why did Hamill call Jones “dad”?
It was a reference to the Star Wars story: Luke Skywalker is Darth Vader’s son. Hamill played Luke, while Jones supplied Vader’s voice. The wording makes sense as a tribute between the characters’ performers, but the reporting does not establish a father-and-son relationship off screen or disclose Hamill’s private intent.
Jones’s contribution to Vader also had a distinct production history. CBS News reported that David Prowse physically played Vader in the original film while Jones recorded the dialogue in about two and a half hours. Jones asked not to be named in that film’s credits; CBS says he was credited as Vader’s voice with Return of the Jedi.

Who was James Earl Jones beyond Darth Vader?
Jones was a major stage and screen actor whose roles included Mufasa in The Lion King, Terence Mann in Field of Dreams, and King Jaffe Joffer in Coming to America. His stage career included Shakespeare and the plays of August Wilson. CBS News described his film and television work as nearly 200 credits, a career-summary figure rather than a new count.
His honors reflected work across several forms. CBS News reported Tony Awards for The Great White Hope and Fences, two Emmy Awards and a Daytime Emmy, a Grammy for a spoken-word recording, an honorary Oscar in 2012, and a special Tony in 2017. The range helps explain why tributes to Jones came from beyond the Star Wars world. Disney CEO Bob Iger, in a tribute reported by ABC News, wrote: “From the gentle wisdom of Mufasa to the menacing threat of Darth Vader, James Earl Jones gave voice to some of the greatest characters in cinema history.”

Jones spoke publicly about living with a stutter from childhood. In a 2008 interview with CBS Sunday Morning, quoted by CBS News, he said, “I stuttered so badly it was embarrassing and very painful.” He also described the stage in terms of joy rather than refuge. Asked whether it was an oasis, he replied, “Oh, I wouldn’t say that; an oasis is a place for survival,” then added, “And this is about joy. … It’s a playpen.”
