Adam MacDonald’s This Is Not a Test puts Olivia Holt’s Sloane and her classmates behind the barricaded doors of a high school during a zombie outbreak. The setup invites a familiar shorthand—The Breakfast Club meets the zombie apocalypse—but the comparison is best treated as a critical question, not a tagline: does this teen ensemble’s solidarity give the horror emotional force, and do the zombies remain a meaningful threat?
What is This Is Not a Test about?
Written and directed by Adam MacDonald, the film adapts Courtney Summers’s novel of the same name. Sloane and fellow students take shelter inside their high school as the outbreak escalates. AMC+ describes the group barricading themselves in the building while danger grows; its official listing classifies the film as horror, drama, mystery and thriller, with a runtime of 1 hour 43 minutes. Holt plays Sloane, with the school setting concentrating the drama on a small group forced into proximity. That premise makes their relationships central: the question is not only how they survive, but whether the pressures of the outbreak make their connections feel earned.
Does the film earn the Breakfast Club comparison?
The comparison has a published critical basis, but it should not be mistaken for official marketing. In a February 20, 2026 review for RogerEbert.com, Simon Abrams described the group dynamic as “a tidy, but lifeless exercise in post-‘The Breakfast Club’ style adolescent solidarity.” That is Abrams’s judgment of the film, not a plot description or consensus verdict. His framing points to the film’s core test: whether a familiar teen-ensemble structure develops into convincing solidarity under pressure, rather than simply arranging different classmates in one crisis. The school-bound setup supplies a natural arena for that dynamic, but a recognizable framework alone cannot make the bonds persuasive. Abrams’s assessment suggests that, for him, the characters’ cohesion feels more like an exercise in a well-known style than a vivid dramatic achievement.
Is it a zombie movie or a character drama?
It is built to be both. The outbreak supplies the immediate danger, while the classmates’ relationships give the story its human focus. Abrams’s other central criticism captures the tension: “A zombie scenario that doesn’t have much use for its zombies, ‘This Is Not a Test’ still mostly coasts thanks to its young cast members’ efforts.” The line credits the cast while questioning whether the horror threat does enough dramatic work.

That distinction matters for viewers choosing between a creature-driven horror film and a contained ensemble drama. The premise promises an active external threat, but the published review indicates that the zombies may recede as the young cast carries the experience. The available evidence does not establish that gore consistently deepens the characters’ predicament; it would be misleading to present graphic violence as the film’s defining strength on that basis.

Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 42% Tomatometer score from 38 critic reviews when retrieved October 5, 2026. That aggregate can change, reflects critic reviews rather than audience consensus, and should be read as a snapshot rather than a verdict. Abrams’s review offers a more specific account of the film’s perceived strengths and limits: young performers help sustain it, while the group dynamic and the zombies themselves draw reservations.
