Netflix confirms the images point to the next season, but does not explain the new game’s rules. The clearest implication is that the competition is continuing with a changed take on “Red Light, Green Light.”
What happens in the mid-credits scene?
After the Season 2 finale, the scene between the credits cuts to three players walking toward Young-hee, the giant doll associated with “Red Light, Green Light.” A boy doll appears opposite her, and a light changes to green. Netflix describes the sequence as a glimpse of Season 3, while TV Insider identifies the boy as Cheol-su and the players as 096, 100 and 353. Netflix’s recap calls the boy doll mysterious rather than naming him.
“Mid-credits scene” is a useful description: Netflix calls it a scene “in between the credits.” Some coverage calls it a post-credits scene, but it is the same brief teaser.
What does the scene mean?
Netflix frames the images as a preview of Season 3, not as a complete explanation of a new round. The dolls and green light strongly suggest that the games are continuing, with a new visual variation on the familiar “Red Light, Green Light” setup. But the recap does not state how two dolls affect the rules, why these three players are shown, or what happens to them.

TV Insider likewise reads the sequence as a possible twist on the games. That is an interpretation of the teaser, not a confirmed explanation from Netflix or the show’s creator. The scene gives viewers a direction to anticipate, not enough information to solve the next game in advance.
Why the teaser follows such a bleak finale
The finale’s immediate cliffhanger is Gi-hun’s failed attempt at armed rebellion. His friend Jung-bae and other players die after Gi-hun fails to realize that Young-il is the Front Man. Netflix’s Season 2 ending explainer presents the deaths as collateral damage of that failure.

The mid-credits sequence shifts from that defeat to the machinery of another game. Season 2 began three years after Gi-hun won the first competition; he returned determined to end it, then entered another deadly contest with new participants. The teaser’s forward glance makes the finale a cliffhanger, not a resolution: Gi-hun’s revolt has failed, and the games appear set to continue.
What the scene does not confirm
- It does not explain the precise rules of the next game or what role each doll will play.
- It does not establish why players 096, 100 and 353 appear in the teaser or reveal their eventual fates.
- It does not include a creator’s definitive explanation of the imagery. Treat specific claims about its symbolism or mechanics as theories unless supported by later on-screen events.
How the creator’s comments add broader context
In a later reflection on the series’ conclusion, creator, writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk described hope and responsibility to future generations as themes. He wrote, “I eventually came to believe that, no matter how hopeless and dark the world and the events around us may seem, perhaps we still have a chance if we can find even a glimpse of hope within ourselves.” He also said, “I believe we also have the responsibility and duty to try everything that we can in our power to leave a better world for the future generation.” (Netflix Tudum)

Those remarks offer a wider lens on the series, but Hwang did not use them to decode this particular teaser or explain the dolls’ game mechanics.
