What if Ashur had survived Mount Vesuvius? Spartacus: House of Ashur answers with an alternate timeline in which Nick Tarabay’s character is rewarded with the former House of Batiatus—and must hold his place in Roman society as an ex-slave, ex-gladiator, and traitor to his former comrades. Entertainment Weekly revealed first-look photos and the ensemble on June 26, 2025, alongside an interview with creator and showrunner Steven S. DeKnight. The series is now listed as a completed ten-episode season on Prime Video.
What if Ashur had lived?
The series branches from the events of Spartacus: Vengeance: in this version, Ashur does not die on Mount Vesuvius. Instead, he is given the former House of Batiatus and faces the challenge of keeping it while navigating a society that still regards him as an outsider and a betrayer. As DeKnight put it, “The only difference is Ashur didn’t die.”
DeKnight said he conceived the successor as taking place roughly six months after Spartacus: War of the Damned. That interval is his account of the concept, not a definitively stated date in the series.
Who is in the first-look cast?
The photos introduce returning and new figures whose rivalries and loyalties shape Ashur’s house and the arena.

Why Achillia stands out
Achillia is presented as the ludus’s sole gladiatrix at the beginning of the story, giving the arena plot a new focus. DeKnight said the series places a female gladiator in its fictional timeline earlier than he believes such fighters appeared historically. That is the showrunner’s framing; the first-look interview is not independent historical verification.

DeKnight described the series as adding a new pillar to the original show’s mix of sex, intrigue, violence, and reversals. Achillia’s fight to surpass male rivals and earn freedom makes that ambition part of the story rather than a claim about the historical record.
Is Ashur a hero now?
Not in DeKnight’s description. “Is he a good guy now? No, he’s Ashur.” The character remains morally complicated; the showrunner says the Roman elites around him are intended to give viewers worse figures by comparison. The premise changes Ashur’s fate, not necessarily his nature.

How to watch, and what the listing confirms
Prime Video currently lists a ten-episode first season, with episode dates spanning December 2025 through February 2026. Its listing includes an 18+ advisory for nudity, violence, sexual content, substance use, and strong language. Availability and purchase terms vary by country and can change, so check the catalog for your territory.
For context, STARZ lists the original Spartacus as a four-season series. Anchor Bay lists Spartacus: The Complete Collection on DVD and Blu-ray, but that is a collection of the original series—not a physical release of House of Ashur. The available information does not establish a DVD or Blu-ray release for the new series.
