James Watkins remade Speak No Evil because he saw a way to use the Danish film’s tense setup to explore social rules from a different angle—not to reproduce it scene for scene. His 2024 version shifts the story to a British setting with American visitors, changes its tone and direction, and reaches a different ending.
Who directed the 2024 Speak No Evil and who is in the cast?
James Watkins wrote and directed the 2024 film. It is based on the screenplay for the 2022 Danish film Gæsterne, written by Christian Tafdrup and Mads Tafdrup. The official trailer describes it as based on that screenplay; Apple TV’s film listing names the principal cast.
- James McAvoy as Paddy
- Mackenzie Davis as Louise
- Scoot McNairy as Ben
- Aisling Franciosi as Ciara
- Alix West Lefler as Agnes
- Dan Hough as Ant
The original follows a Danish couple visiting a Dutch couple. Watkins’s version reframes the visitors as Americans and the hosts as a British family.
Why did James Watkins remake the Danish film?
Watkins said Blumhouse sent him the original, which he admired, but he saw little point in making the same film again. In a 2024 interview with Spain’s Cadena SER, he said the premise and characters offered a chance to examine how people negotiate rules and social conventions, while moving the story to the UK and giving it a different tone and destination.

He made the distinction explicit in a Deadline interview published September 15, 2024, and syndicated by Yahoo Entertainment: “Whether we want to call it a remake or a re-imagining, I didn’t just want to slavishly remake Christian’s film shot for shot, scene for scene, tone for tone.” He also said conversations with actors Scoot McNairy and Mackenzie Davis, as well as American audience testing and screenings, informed his approach.
How is the remake different from the original?
Setting and character framing
The remake transfers the story from a Danish couple visiting a Dutch couple to American visitors staying with a British family. That shift lets Watkins approach the premise through a different cultural and social frame; it does not, by itself, establish a universal contrast between American, British, Danish or Dutch behavior.

Tone and social conventions
Watkins said he wanted to explore the pressure people feel to observe social rules, and to take the material toward a different tone and destination. Time’s 2024 coverage likewise describes his interest in the horror embedded in ordinary social interaction. It characterizes Tafdrup’s original as commenting on social conventions in Nordic culture; that is a reading of the film, not a rule about how all Nordic people behave.
Ending
The endings differ. Watkins’s stated aim was a different tone and direction, but the available interviews do not establish that he changed the ending specifically to make it happier or more commercial. The clearest comparison is therefore that the remake preserves a recognizable premise while making distinct choices about setting, characterization, tone and resolution.
