In “Whitewashed Tombs,” Dave Gudsen’s arrest of Freddy brings him public acclaim, but it also makes his private life harder to manage. Ashley rejects his hopes of reconciliation, Freddy confronts him with his concealed anger, and Michelle Calderone’s inquiry gives Dave’s ex-wife reason to warn him. By the end, Dave recognizes that the investigation is closing in—and that its people are no longer as hidden as they think.
“Whitewashed Tombs” is season 1, episode 7 of Apple’s crime thriller Smoke, released August 1, 2025. Apple’s official listing describes Calderone taking on a covert mission while Gudsen navigates new-found glory and an unexpected confrontation. The scene-by-scene account below follows Show Snob’s recap; it is not a claim to reproduce every moment of the episode.
Dave’s arrest makes him a public hero
The episode begins in the wake of Dave catching Freddy Fasano, the “milk jug arsonist.” The arrest brings Dave renewed media attention and interest in his book. For the investigators who suspect Dave, that success is frustrating: the evidence against him remains limited, while his public standing grows.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That contrast drives the episode. Dave can present himself as the investigator who caught Freddy, but the acclaim does not repair his personal relationships or quiet the scrutiny around him.
Ashley refuses the reunion Dave wants
Dave hopes that his new visibility might help him reconnect with Ashley. She does not respond as he wants, rebuffing him rather than affirming the image of a man enjoying a triumphant return. The recap describes a flash of anger from Dave, an unsettling counterpoint to his public composure.

Freddy confronts Dave with his anger
Freddy refuses to speak with anyone but Dave. Calderone watches as Freddy challenges Dave to face the rage he keeps concealed. Dave maintains control in the room, but after leaving he vomits in the parking lot and drives away. His reaction suggests how difficult he finds it to contain what Freddy has brought to the surface; the episode does not require a definitive diagnosis or explanation to make the confrontation disturbing.
Freddy later dies by suicide in his cell. The death turns his encounter with Dave into the episode’s most painful development, rather than a simple victory lap after his arrest.

The investigation advances, but its tactics give Dave warning
Steven Burke and Dawn Hudson arrange a meeting with Dave under a pretext, hoping to make him incriminate himself. Dawn presses too hard, and Dave gives them little. Their approach fails to produce the confession they are seeking.
Calderone pursues a different line of inquiry, speaking first with Ashley and then with Dave’s ex-wife, Reba. Reba grows suspicious of the questions and alerts Dave. The investigation has reached someone close to him, but that contact also gives him a warning.

Dave realizes who is closing in
Dave spots Dawn with Ezra and understands that Harvey Englehart is also involved in the investigation. The pieces make the scrutiny around him visible. Rather than being caught unaware, he ends the episode angry and newly alert to the people watching him.
The episode’s tension comes from that shift: the investigators have not secured a confession, and Dave now knows to look for them. His public reputation as the man who caught Freddy and the suspicions gathering around his own conduct occupy the same space, with neither side of his life able to stay separate.

Calderone faces pressure at home, too
Alongside the case, Calderone is dealing with her mother’s upcoming parole. She tries to persuade her sister-in-law Rose to resist her mother’s return; Rose, in turn, questions Benji. This subplot adds a personal strain to Calderone’s covert work without displacing the episode’s central movement around Dave.
Why “Whitewashed Tombs” changes the pressure on Dave
Dave’s arrest of Freddy initially gives him the kind of public success that can shield a person from doubt. The episode steadily undermines that protection: Ashley refuses the reconciliation he wants, Freddy forces a confrontation with his anger, and Reba’s warning tells him that investigators are asking questions. By the final scenes, the team has not resolved its case, but Dave has recognized the threat—and that awareness changes the balance between them.
