Tim Scott’s June 5, 2023, appearance on The View grew tense as he and co-host Sunny Hostin debated race, systemic racism and what individual examples of Black achievement say about opportunity. The interview included interruptions, a visible cue that the show was going to a commercial break, and audience members booing during a later exchange. Whoopi Goldberg told the audience not to boo. Calling the segment “chaos” is a characterization; these are the documented moments behind it.
Why Tim Scott appeared on The View
Scott joined the program on June 5, 2023, as a Republican senator from South Carolina seeking the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. The conversation covered race and opportunity as well as Republican policy. Inside Edition’s contemporaneous report described the appearance and the audience reaction; RealClearPolitics’ video and transcript excerpts document the central exchange.

What Scott and Hostin disagreed about
Hostin asked Scott about systemic racism and racial inequality, challenging the idea that his experience demonstrated broad access to opportunity. Scott said he came on the program partly because he believed an earlier message on the show had portrayed Black children’s success as exceptional rather than something they should expect to achieve.
Scott objected to that framing, saying: “That is a dangerous, offensive, disgusting message to send to our young people today, that the only way to succeed is by being the exception.” RealClearPolitics’ transcript excerpt attributes the line to Scott. He pointed to examples he saw as evidence of progress and opportunity; Hostin emphasized persistent structural disparities and questioned whether individual success could answer those concerns. CNN’s June 5 transcript also places Scott’s objection in the discussion of race and opportunity.

What made the interview look unusually tense
The exchange became heated, with Scott and the hosts speaking over one another. Michael Fairman TV’s June 5 account describes a moment when Scott turned to answer Hostin while Goldberg was speaking to him. Goldberg moved beside Hostin to make her point about whom Scott was addressing.
Later, as Goldberg tried to take the program to a commercial break, Scott continued speaking. A production staff member entered the camera shot and told him the show was going to break. In a subsequent exchange about Republican policy, audience members booed, and Goldberg asked them to stop. Fairman TV reports the visible break cue and audience response.

What the footage does—and does not—show
The reported moments support describing a contentious television discussion, interruptions, an on-camera production cue and a vocal audience reaction. They do not establish a physical altercation or that the program lost control beyond those moments. “Chaos” is therefore a headline-style judgment about the tone, not a literal account of a fight or a broadcast shutdown.
Some figures were mentioned during the exchange, including claims by Scott about unemployment and educational attainment and a claim by Hostin about homelessness. The cited transcript records those statements, but they are claims made by the speakers, not independently verified statistics in these accounts. They should not be treated as established figures without checking the relevant original statistical sources.
