On The View on November 7, 2024, Sunny Hostin attributed reported Latino support for Donald Trump to misogyny and sexism. Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin disagreed, arguing that border concerns mattered. The exchange offered competing interpretations—not proof of why any individual or Texas community voted as it did.

What Hostin and Griffin said on The View

The disagreement came during the show’s post-election discussion. Hostin said, “Misogyny! It’s misogyny!” and later, “Misogyny and sexism — that’s what that was.” Griffin pushed back: “No! It’s on the border! The border crisis is on their doorstep!” The lines are reported in Mediaite’s account of the exchange; Salon also recapped the segment.

Griffin cited a Texas area she described as 97% Latino and said it went “75 percentage points for Donald Trump.” Those are her reported on-air figures, not independently verified local results: the recaps do not establish the precise geographic unit or clarify the metric. TV Insider’s episode recap also places the exchange in the show’s post-election coverage.

What survey evidence adds—and what it cannot show

A September 24, 2024 Pew Research Center survey provides pre-election context. The bilingual survey of 9,720 adults, including 691 Latino registered voters, was conducted August 26–September 2. At that point, 57% of Latino registered voters said they would vote for Kamala Harris and 39% for Trump. Those figures reflect stated preference before Election Day, not the final vote or the views of every Latino voter.

Within the survey, Latino Trump supporters often named several issues as important: 93% cited the economy, 73% violent crime, and 71% immigration. These are reported priorities. They do not show that immigration—or any other issue—caused a particular vote, much less establish why voters in the Texas area Griffin referenced chose Trump.

Associated Press coverage of AP VoteCast likewise described nationwide patterns: voters focused on the economy strongly favored Trump, and support for deporting people in the country illegally had increased from 2020. That national context cannot determine the motives of Latino voters in one locality. VoteCast is a voter survey, not an experiment that can isolate a single cause of an election result.

How to assess the competing explanations

Claim or evidence What it supports What it does not establish
Hostin’s interpretation: misogyny and sexism One co-host’s explanation during the broadcast exchange. A measured cause of Latino voting behavior or proof that misogyny explains a local result.
Griffin’s interpretation: border concerns Another co-host’s explanation, alongside her attributed description of a Texas area. Verified local results or proof that border concerns determined voters’ choices.
Pew’s pre-election survey Stated candidate preference and issue priorities among surveyed Latino registered voters before Election Day. Final vote totals, individual motives, or a causal explanation for a specific locality.
AP VoteCast context Nationwide associations between issue focus and vote choice, plus a reported change in deportation support. A cause specific to Latino voters or to the Texas area discussed on the show.

“Why did Latinos in Texas vote for Trump?” cannot be answered with a single explanation from this exchange or these surveys. Latino voters are not a monolith: aggregate findings can describe patterns, but individuals may have voted for different reasons. The available evidence supports distinguishing the hosts’ interpretations from surveyed priorities and from proven causation.
