Spoilers for Season 2, Episode 2, “Where the Stars are Strange.” The episode’s pivotal turn comes when Sauron approaches Celebrimbor under a new identity: Annatar, a supposed messenger of the Valar who offers to help the elven smith forge more Rings. It is not a new ally arriving in good faith; it is Sauron finding another way back into the work he wants to control.
What happens in “Where the Stars are Strange”?
Prime Video’s official synopsis frames the episode around three connected strands: darkness falling over Khazad-dûm, Sauron and Galadriel each seeking new allies, and the Stranger and the Harfoots confronting a growing threat. The synopsis establishes those threads, but does not detail how each develops or resolves in this episode. The listing gives the episode a TV-14 rating and a runtime of 1 hour 3 minutes (Prime Video episode listing).
Who is Annatar, and is he really Sauron?
Annatar is Sauron in another guise. Season 1 ended with the revelation that Halbrand was Sauron; in Season 2, the Annatar persona lets him approach Celebrimbor as a seemingly helpful and knowledgeable figure. Amazon describes Annatar as the “Lord of Gifts,” whose offer of help and knowledge is meant to manipulate the elves into making more Rings (Amazon’s Season 2 guide; Amazon’s Sauron guide).
Why does Sauron want Celebrimbor to make more Rings?
Celebrimbor’s skill gives Sauron a route back to the forging of Rings. In the reported ending, Annatar claims to be a messenger of the Valar and offers to help Celebrimbor make more Rings using dwarven mithril. The offer presents Sauron as a source of guidance, while advancing his effort to influence the Ring-making process (TheWrap’s episode-ending report and Charlie Vickers interview).

How Annatar differs from Halbrand
Halbrand and Annatar are both identities Sauron uses to earn access and trust, but Annatar’s approach is more overtly built around wisdom and expertise. Actor Charlie Vickers told TheWrap that he changed the character’s movement and speech to make that distinction: “I moved differently and I talked differently, and all of that is informed by wanting to bring a level of wisdom to the character. You need great wisdom to convince the greatest of elven smiths to work with you. That was the key word in developing this ‘fair form’ of Annatar, Lord of Gifts.”
The performance matters because Annatar’s deception is not only a matter of appearance. He must seem like someone Celebrimbor could learn from—and trust with consequential work.
