The remarks drew comparisons to The Purge, the 2013 film built around a fictional period when crimes are allowed. That comparison describes the reaction to Trump’s words; it does not establish that he announced a formal “Purge” policy.
What did Trump say about one really violent day?
Trump made the remarks while discussing shoplifting at his Erie, Pennsylvania, campaign rally on September 29, 2024. The Guardian reported that he spoke about people leaving stores with air conditioners and refrigerators, complained that police were being prevented from doing their jobs, and referred to California’s $950 threshold for certain theft offenses.
He then said: “Now, if you had one really violent day … one rough hour, and I mean real rough. The word will get out and it will end immediately.” Forbes also reported the “one really violent day” and “one rough hour” phrasing; The Washington Post described his suggestion as police getting “extraordinarily rough.” The Guardian’s account, Forbes’ report, and The Washington Post’s coverage provide the surrounding context.
Why is The Purge trending?
Critics and news coverage compared the remarks to The Purge, a 2013 film whose fictional premise allows crimes, including violent crimes, during a recurring 12-hour period. The comparison draws on the idea of a temporary suspension of ordinary restraints and the prospect of violence as deterrence.

| Point of comparison | The Purge | Trump’s rally remarks |
|---|---|---|
| Conduct | The fictional premise encompasses crimes, including violent crimes. | The remarks concerned shoplifting and police response, as reported by news outlets. |
| Duration | A recurring 12-hour window in the film’s premise. | Trump shifted between “one really violent day” and “one rough hour.” |
| Status | Fictional worldbuilding. | Campaign remarks the campaign characterized as not a policy proposal. |
The analogy is a cultural reaction to the remarks, not proof of a plan to suspend the law or authorize a period of unrestricted crime. Forbes identifies the film as the first in its series. The film’s IMDb listing identifies it as a 2013 release.
Was Trump proposing a policy?
The campaign said the remarks were not a policy proposal. The Washington Post reported that a Trump campaign official told Politico the idea was “clearly just floating [the idea] in jest.” Campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said Trump was reiterating the importance of enforcing existing laws. The Guardian likewise reported that the campaign denied the comments amounted to a policy proposal.

Those statements describe the campaign’s characterization; they do not independently settle Trump’s intent. In a September 30, 2024 CNN broadcast discussion, Republican Rep. Byron Donalds called the comment unscripted and said there was “no policy behind that.” CNN labels the transcript a rush transcript that may be updated, so it is a record of contemporaneous debate rather than a definitive finding about policy or intent. CNN’s transcript records the discussion.
What did crime data show at the time?
In September 2024, The Washington Post cited FBI annual figures showing that national violent crime decreased 3 percent from 2022 to 2023, while murder and nonnegligent homicide decreased 11.6 percent over the same period. These are historical annual changes reported in 2024, not measures of crime in 2026. They provide context for the remarks but do not, by themselves, establish what caused the declines or answer how shoplifting enforcement should work. The Washington Post reported the figures, attributing them to the FBI.

What was the $950 California law?
The $950 threshold Trump invoked was not a law enacted by Kamala Harris. The Guardian’s October 3, 2024 correction explains that former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed the threshold into law four years before Harris became attorney general.
That threshold and Proposition 47 are related to California theft law but are distinct. Voters approved Proposition 47 while Harris was attorney general; the measure downgraded some offenses from felonies to misdemeanors. The Guardian reports that Harris remained neutral on Proposition 47. The Guardian’s corrected report sets out the distinction.
