The Piano Lesson turns a family fight over an heirloom into a larger question: what do descendants owe the past, and what can they claim for themselves now? Malcolm Washington’s 2024 film adapts August Wilson’s play, following siblings who disagree over whether to sell a piano carved with their family’s history. The premise promises a close, charged drama; whether the film’s ghosts and theatrical roots make that conflict compelling on screen is the key question for viewers.
What is The Piano Lesson about?
Set in Pittsburgh in 1936, the story centers on the Charles family and an ornate piano passed down through generations. Its carvings preserve the story of an enslaved ancestor, making the instrument more than property: it is a family record, a reminder of violence, and a surviving link between the living and the dead. The film’s official Netflix listing describes a family confronting the ghosts of its past.
Boy Willie wants to turn inheritance into opportunity
Boy Willie argues that the piano should be sold. He wants the money to build a future for the family, not leave its history locked inside an object. His position is practical, but it is not simply greedy: the question is whether holding on to a symbol can matter more than using its value to gain material ground in the present.
Berniece sees the piano as a responsibility
Berniece refuses to sell. To her, the carvings are evidence of what her ancestors endured and a bond with people whose lives cannot be reduced to a price. Her position is not mere nostalgia; selling the piano could feel like surrendering a record that the family has a duty to keep.

Their uncle Doaker tries to mediate, but neither sibling’s claim can be dismissed as a simple right-or-wrong answer. That tension is the play’s engine: a family must decide how to live with history when memory has both emotional weight and potential monetary value.
What does the piano symbolize?
The piano is at once an heirloom, a work of art, a possible source of money, and a carved archive. The family’s dispute asks whether preserving that archive is itself a form of inheritance—or whether descendants should be free to convert it into something useful to them. The carvings connect private family memory to the wider history of enslavement, so the argument cannot be separated from the past that made the instrument valuable in the first place.

That layered meaning is why the story’s supernatural element matters. The ghosts are not just an extra source of suspense: they make the past present within the family home, turning an argument about what to do with an object into a confrontation with what the family has inherited. Associated Press coverage describes the adaptation as both a family drama and a ghost story, and director Malcolm Washington told the AP, “We tried to haunt the piano itself, to charge it with that kind of spirit,” the outlet reported.
How does the film adapt August Wilson’s play?
August Wilson’s play is part of his ten-play American Century Cycle, which follows Black life in the United States across different decades. Its 1936 Pittsburgh setting places the Charles family’s decision in a specific historical moment: the Great Depression and the migration of Black families from the American South are part of the context around the Hill District and the family’s history. Netflix’s adaptation feature discusses that neighborhood and the play’s place in Wilson’s cycle.

A story concentrated in a family home brings a distinct adaptation challenge. The play’s force comes from long exchanges in which characters argue over history, family obligation, and opportunity; a film can preserve that verbal pressure, but it also has to find a visual language for it. The haunting offers one route, giving cinema a way to suggest that the piano’s history is not confined to what the characters say. Whether those choices deepen the drama or distract from Wilson’s language is a matter of execution, not something the premise alone can settle.
There is also a notable thread of stage history in the casting. Samuel L. Jackson originated Boy Willie at Yale Repertory Theatre in 1987 and later played Doaker in the 2022 Broadway revival, where John David Washington played Boy Willie. In the film, John David Washington is Boy Willie, Danielle Deadwyler is Berniece, and Jackson is Doaker. The Netflix feature on the adaptation outlines that history.

It is a natural pick for viewers drawn to family dramas that wrestle with history, inheritance, and the cost of opportunity, especially those curious about how Wilson’s stage writing translates to film. The story offers a conflict with real force on both sides: Boy Willie’s desire to turn an heirloom into a future and Berniece’s insistence that the family not lose its account of the past.

The central caveat is that knowing the premise and credits does not answer how the movie handles its performances, pacing, or supernatural effects. Those are the elements that determine whether this screen version sustains the pressure of the play or makes the drama feel more theatrical than cinematic. For a viewer deciding whether to watch, the subject and source material are strong reasons to be interested; the final judgment depends on how well the film brings the family’s competing claims to life.
