The show’s official account answered with a sarcastic jab; DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin then said the response was drawing attention to ICE recruitment. The exchange was reported at the time by Rolling Stone and Fox News.
What happened between South Park and DHS?
On August 6, 2025, the Department of Homeland Security used a screenshot from South Park depicting ICE officers in a recruitment post that linked to the agency’s recruitment site, according to Rolling Stone’s contemporaneous report. The show did not endorse the recruitment campaign. Its official account responded mockingly, and DHS publicly treated the resulting attention as useful publicity for hiring.
South Park’s sarcastic response
Fox News reported that the show’s official account replied: “Wait, so we ARE relevant? #eatabagofd—-.” The wording is reproduced in Fox News’ August 6 report; the original social post was not independently captured in the reporting available here.
DHS welcomed the attention
In a statement to Fox News Digital, reported August 6, DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said: “We want to thank South Park for drawing attention to ICE law enforcement recruitment: We are calling on patriotic Americans to help us remove murderers, gang members, pedophiles, and other violent criminals from our country. Benefits available to new ICE recruits include an up to $50,000 signing bonus, student loan forgiveness, and retirement benefits. Apply today at join.ice.gov.”

The incident was a public clash between government recruitment messaging and a satirical show’s imagery: DHS used the cartoon in a hiring pitch, the show’s account mocked the use, and a spokesperson framed the attention as helpful. The available reporting and official episode listings do not establish whether DHS had permission to use the image or any legal finding about image rights. They also do not make the show’s response an endorsement of ICE.
